The International Cricket Council (ICC) has accused West
Indies players particularly, captain Darren Sammy and batsman Marlon
Samuels, of bringing the game into disrepute following the comments made
by the pair post their victory against England in the final of the
recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2016 in India.
Sammy used the presentation ceremony to criticise the West
Indies Cricket Board for their policies and behaviour and also accused
them of disrespecting the team. Samuels who scored a match winning
unbeaten 66-ball 85 was fined 30% of his match fee for abusing Ben
Stokes following their win, and for dedicating his Player of the Match
award to legendary spinner Shane Warne with whom he has had a history
both on and off the field.
The ICC which had a four-day meeting in Dubai to discuss various matters, while not naming Sammy and Samuels said in a press release:
"The sport of cricket is proud of its unique spirit and this involves
being gracious in victory as well as defeat and respectful at all times
to the game, one's opponents, the sponsors and the fans."
"The board considered the behaviour of some of the West
Indies players in the immediate aftermath of the final, and unanimously
agreed that certain comments and actions were inappropriate,
disrespectful and brought the event into disrepute."
"The board acknowledged an apology by the West Indies cricket board
but was disappointed to note that such behaviour had detracted from the
success of what was a magnificent tournament and final."West Indies are set to host a tri-nation One Day International series featuring Australia and South Africa from 3 June.
