The Beyhive has been buzzing about Rachel Roy ever since Beyonce's Lemonade dropped on Saturday night, with themes of infidelity. Some fans are speculating that the 42-year-old designer is Beyonce's "Becky with the good hair" -- i.e. the "other woman" -- based on the telling lyric in her song, "Sorry."
Roy's seemingly pointed Instagram message on
Saturday, in which she wrote, "Good hair don't care" -- which she later
deleted before making her account private -- added even more fuel to the
fire.
But just who is Roy, and what's her connection to Jay Z?
Read on to find out eight things about the mother-of-two who's been suddenly thrust into the spotlight.
1. She used to be married to Damon Dash, who was once business partners with Jay Z before they had a falling out.
Roy was previously married to Damon Dash -- Jay
Z's former Roc-A-Fella Records business partner and friend -- before
splitting in 2009 after four years of marriage. The two didn't break up
on good terms, to say the least. Roy got sole custody of their two
daughters, Ava and Tallulah, in 2015, and she also obtained a three-year restraining order against her ex.
Meanwhile, Jay and Dash's well-known fallout was similarly on bad terms.
"The betrayal of friendships and people that pick
business over friendships, yeah, it bothers me ... I never really
understood if Jay was my friend," Dash commented on the 46-year-old
rapper years later in an interview with Wiretapped Live
last October. "Our friendship is based around our business, obviously,
so we weren't around each other, just hanging out. Because I was so
passionate about what I was doing, I became friendly with him. I thought
we were friends. But I guess I got gaffled."
2. She's been a successful designer for over a decade, and has dressed everyone from Oprah Winfrey to Gwyneth Paltrow.
Roy started as an intern for Rocawear -- Dash and
Jay's clothing line -- and rose to the position of creative director of
the women's and children's divisions before marrying Dash. In 2004, she
launched her own line.
Since then, Roy has dressed countless celebrities including Gwyneth Paltrow, Oprah Winfrey, Halle Berry, and Sofia Vergara.
"I do think that if it's what you love and what
you are truly good at, and you have the passion for it, I think you will
work so hard at it, and it just becomes your life," Roy told ET in
February 2012 about managing her own fashion line. "It's not a job, it's
not a 9 to 5. Nothing about what I love is easy, but it's what I truly
love, and so it doesn't even feel like work."
3. She was once very close friends with Kim Kardashian.
Roy has been open about her tight friendship with
the 35-year-old reality star, and was there during Kanye West's
extravagant proposal to Kardashian in 2013 at AT&T Park in San
Francisco.
"Kim and I met at a fashion event several years
ago. We were seated next to each other and I just really realized that
we have a lot of shared values," Roy told ET about their friendship in a
2013 interview. "We have a lot of things in common and we have become
closer and closer over the years."
Roy attended the couple's Florence, Italy, wedding
in 2014, which curiously, Bey and Jay skipped, although Jay and Kanye
are close collaborators and friends.
"I think that when you are marrying your best
friend, there's nothing better than that," Roy also told ET about
Kardashian and West. "Together they are unstoppable."
4. She was once tight with Solange.
Interestingly enough, Beyonce's younger sister, Solange, posed arm in arm with Roy at the MET Gala red carpet in 2012.
Things certainly changed just two years later,
when it was reported that Solange had a heated confrontation with Roy at
a Met Gala afterparty, prior to the singer's infamous elevator attack on her brother-in-law in May 2014.
Beyonce has also definitely run in the same
circles as Roy. The "Formation" singer sat just six seats down from the
designer at the Vera Wang Spring 2012 fashion show, pictured here
front-row with Solange, La La Anthony, and Kardashian, who was seated
next to Roy.
5. Roy's other famous friends include Chrissy Teigen and Michelle Obama.
Roy appears to be pretty popular in the Hollywood
scene, and has been pictured multiple times with model Chrissy Teigen
and her husband, John Legend.
Check out Teigen and Roy looking like besties at the CFDA Fashion Awards in 2014.
In addition, Roy is a favorite of Michelle Obama,
who has worn her creations often. In fact, in 2012, Roy told ET that she
was designing for both the first lady and her husband, President Barack
Obama, for his re-election campaign.
"It's one of the best feelings in the world as a
designer, that someone so heavily scrutinized made the decision to wear
pieces that I create," she said about dressing the fashionable first
lady at the time. "I aspire to be like her."
6. She says women are her inspiration.
Roy is definitely a proponent of strong women, and
told ET in 2012 that the goal of her clothing is to make women feel
"smart, strong, and confident."
"If you're smart, you're gonna figure out how to
be sexy, you're gonna figure out how to look good -- everything else
will just kind of follow suit," she said. "So, for me, if a woman feels
smart, confident, and strong, then I've done my job."
7. She wears her heart on her sleeve.
Roy is OK with people not being a fan of hers.
"You know, I'm old enough now to have lived so
many different lives, [to know] that everything comes and goes, but the
one thing that's constant is what your true passion is and [what] your
true love is," she told ET in 2012 about being labeled fashion's "It
Girl." "So I pretty much am very transparent, and I wear my heart on my
sleeve. You know, some people are attracted to that and some people
aren't. Again, that's OK."
In 2011, Roy wore pajamas to the One Day premiere to show her daughter that being true to yourself is more important than what others think.
"I probably don't like what those people [the ones
who criticized her] wear so it's OK," she told ET. "I don't have to be
everything to everyone. I just have to be really good at what I believe
in."
8. She's not Rachael Ray.
Some fans have been attacking Rachael Ray on her social media accounts since Saturday, after hilariously mixing her up with Roy.
So, please note -- the 47-year-old celebrity cook and author is NOT Rachel Roy!
Roy canceled a public appearance on Monday following the weekend's Lemonade drama, pulling out of the event due to "a personal emergency."
