Two Nigerians, Ojukwu Nnamdi Rowland and Ngene Linus Chibuike (pictured above), who were arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, while attempting to smuggle $5, 424,270 USD out of the country in October last year, have been convicted and sentenced to two years imprisonment respectively by Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court, Lagos.

Rowland was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on October 22, 2015, for being in possession of cash in the sum of US$2,917,272 (Two Million, Nine Hundred and Seventeen Thousand, Two Hundred and Seventy Two United States Dollars) during his outbound clearance for a journey to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Rowland did not declare the money to men and officers of the Nigeria Customs Service and was subsequently arrested and arraigned before Justice Buba. He pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge preferred against him and the matter went into full trial. Justice Buba found him guilty and sentenced him to two years imprisonment. He also ordered that the convict should forfeit the entire sum of $2,917,272 USD (Two Million, Nine Hundred and Seventeen Thousand, Two Hundred and Seventy Two United States Dollars) to the Nigerian government.

Justice Buba said the convict did not do the right thing by failing to declare the money to Customs officials. He ruled that the two years imprisonment should take effect from February 9, 2016.
Chibuike, on the other hand, was arraigned on October 22, 2015 for falsely declaring the sum of US$11,500 (Eleven Thousand and Five Hundred United States Dollars) out of the sum of $2,506,998 USD (Two Million, Five Hundred and Six Thousand, Nine Hundred and Ninety Eight United States Dollars) he had in his possession during an outbound clearance for a journey to China en-route Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge raised against him and the matter went into full trial. Justice Buba found him guilty and sentenced him to two years imprisonment.

He also ordered that the convict should forfeit the sum of $2,495, 498 (Two Million, Four Hundred and Ninety- Five Thousand, Four Hundred and Ninety-Eight United States Dollars) not declared to the customs officials to the Nigerian government.

He ruled that the two years imprisonment should take effect from February 9, 2016.

Minister of Transport and former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, says all the allegations of corruption leveled against him by his successor, Nyesom Wike and the past government, are without proof. According to him, he suffered a lot in the hands of EFCC as the governor of Rivers State. Amaechi said this while delivering a lecture titled “Legislature and Executive Partnership for Effective Performance,” at a retreat for the executive arms of Plateau State government held at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) Kuru, yesterday February 2nd.

“I suffered a lot about corruption without any proof against me by anti-graft agency. I was harassed, though I fought my way through, they accused me of corruption. I suffered a lot, I suffered a lot about corruption. I don’t like money. I believe once you can feed, you don’t need money again. All those who accumulate are doing so to their detriment” he said.

At the resumed hearing of the case filed by EFCC against former PDP National Publicity secretary, Olisa Metuh for receiving N400 million from the office of Sambo Dasuki, one of the prosecuting witnesses, Nneka Ararume, told the court that Metuh gave her $2 million at his house in Prince and Princess Estate, Abuja, to help him invest.

Nneka who says she is a Wealth Manager with Asset and Resource Management Company Limited, said she changed the money to its Naira equivalent through two bureau de change operators and put the money in the company account.

"He gave me the sum of $2m in $100 bills. It was taken to bureau de change operators who would then transfer the money to ARM. From there (Metuh’s house) I proceeded to Mr. Sie Iyenome’s office at Wuse 2 where I gave him the sum of $1m. I also invited Mr. Kabir Mohammed and I also gave him the sum of $1m to transfer the naira equivalent in favour of Destra Investment Limited. Later on the same day, December 2, 2014, Mr. Kabir and Mr. Sie Iyenome confirmed the receipt.”
One of the Bureau de change men, Iyenomealso testified in court, confirming that he changed the $1m he received from Nneka and paid it into the account of Nneka's company. EFCC says it has 16 more witnesses to produce that will testify on the $2m investment money. They will be produced in court tomorrow when the case will resume for hearing.

As the investigation into the $2.1 billion arms deal fraud continues, operatives of the EFCC this weekend, confiscated some properties believed to belong to former National Security Adviser (NSA) Sambo Dasuki as well as those owned by a former Theatre Commander of the Operation Lafia Dole in Maiduguri, Major Gen. Yishau Mahmood Abubakar. Both men have been indicted in the scandal.

According to The Nation, the properties owned by Dasuki that were confiscated include a hotel complex on Rabah Road, Malali GRA in the heart of Kaduna metropolis and a mansion under construction on Sani Sami Road, also in Malali GRA. Among the properties of Maj.-Gen. Abubakar that was confiscated include a residential duplex located at No. 5C, Sultan Close.

When EFCC operatives arrived at the house, a birthday party was going on there. Everybody was asked to vacate the premises immediately. The house was immediately locked and marked with red with the inscription"keep off". Also confiscated was a shopping mall allegedly owned by Gen. Abubakar’s wife. Another shopping mall on Sultan Road, which is believed to belong to Gen. Abubakar’s friend who is an Ambassador was also confiscated.

Italy's top court has ruled that a man who offered €100 to cops is not guilty of corruption because the sum is not substantial. The decision may have also taken into cognizance the man's state of mind at the time, as the man was caught driving under influence which made him offer the bribe to escape arrest. The driver was however convicted of drunk driving, which carries a fine of 6,200 euros, a suspended license for a year and also a year in prison.

Italian law states that a bribery attempt is labeled corruption when the action is made "with appropriate seriousness," and if the attempt is able to psychologically unsettle the public official".

The Founder and General Overseer of the Household of God Church, Pastor Chris Okotie, says President Muhammadu Buhari needs the support of all Nigerians as he continues to clean up the corruption perpetrated by the Peoples Democratic Party.

Okotie, who contested for the presidency on three occasions, said Buhari was the epitome of transparency and discipline, adding that his attitude had rubbed off on the armed forces which had become more effective in the fight against insurgency.

He described the 16-year rule of the PDP as the government of the corrupt, by the corrupt and for the corrupt.

He said, “More than at any time in our history, we need discipline in the armed forces. And, thank God we have an ex-general, who is an epitome of discipline and transparency, in power. I urge Nigerians to support his anti-corruption campaign which aims to rid this country of PDP’s legacy of a government of the corrupt, by the corrupt, and for the corrupt.”

Meanwhile, Okotie’s party, the Fresh Democratic Party, has denied accusing the All Progressives Congress of planning to rig the forthcoming Rivers State governorship election.

The party’s Director of Media and Communications Strategy, Ladi Ayodeji, said in a statement that it had no hand in the allegation, adding that the allegation was the handiwork of the Inter-Party Advisory Council of Nigeria.

The statement read in part, “The attention of our great party, FRESH, has been drawn to an advertorial by the Inter-Party Advisory Council of Nigeria published in a national daily on Wednesday, January 20, 2016.

“In the said publication, IPAC listed FRESH as one of its (Rivers State chapter) members accusing the APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission of conspiracy to rig the forthcoming rerun in Rivers State in favour of the APC candidate.

“In the advertorial, one Chief Collins J. Ndegwe purportedly represented FRESH at an IPAC meeting in Rivers State, where our party joined other parties to condemn the alleged plot by INEC/APC to rig the APC into power in the state.

“Obviously, the IPAC, Rivers chapter, is in sympathy with the PDP governorship candidate and incumbent Governor Nyesome Wike. FRESH has no problem with that. However, it is criminal for anyone or group to drag our party into this unholy alliance.

“We would like to make it abundantly clear that Chief Ndegwe is not our member, and has never been authorised to represent FRESH in IPAC, or at any other forum for that matter.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arraigned the duo of Shehu Mustapha, Registrar Litigation, Adamawa State High Court and Barrister Binanu R. Esthon, former Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association, Yola Chapter before Justice B.B Aliyu of the Federal High Court sitting in Yola, Adamawa State on a 4-count charge bordering on conspiracy and criminal diversion of funds to the tune of N60million (sixty million naira).

According to a statement signed by the spokesperson of EFCC, Mustapha and Esthon were docked following a complaint alleging criminal conspiracy between the accused persons.

A group of staff numbering five hundred and one were disengaged from Stirling Civil Engineering Company Limited, but had their entitlements withheld by the Company. The disengaged staff, through the former NBA boss, Esthon, instituted a lawsuit against their employer (Stirling Civil Engineering Company Limited) at the Adamawa State High Court sitting in Yola, and had the judgment entered in their favour. According to them, Esthon, in connivance with Mustapha, the registrar of the court, diverted part of the funds meant for the settlement of their entitlements to personal use.

Count one of the charge reads:
“That you, Shehu Mustapha sometime between 2007-2009 at Yola, Adamawa State within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court with intent to defraud, did obtained money, the sum of N59, 995,000.00 from Alhaji Yusuf Abubakar being the proceeds recovered from the auction executed against the properties of Stirling Civil Engineering Company Limited as judgment debtor delivered by Adamawa State High Court in suit No.ADSY/60M/2007 under the false pretence that the said sum was to be utilized in settling the judgment creditors which you never did instead diverted the said sum to your personal use, thereby committed an offence contrary to the provisions of Section 2 (1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act LFN 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act.”

The accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them. In view of their plea, counsel to EFCC, A. Y. Muntaqa asked the court for a date to commence trial.

However, L. D Nzadon, counsel to the accused persons, urged the court to admit the defendants to bail adding that, the accused persons would not do anything to frustrate their trial. Justice Aliyu admitted the accused persons to bail in the sum of N5million and a surety each in like sum.

The case has been adjourned to March 14, 15, 16 and 17, 2016 for hearing.

The scheduled judgment in a suit filed against the Attorney General of the Federation by a former Minister of Aviation, Mrs. Stella Oduah, could not be delivered on Monday owing to the transfer of the presiding judge, Justice Okon Abang, from Lagos to the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court.

Justice Abang, who was moved from Lagos to Abuja early this month, had on December 1, 2015 fixed Monday for judgment in the case after taking arguments from all the parties in the suit.

Erstwhile registrars to the judge, however, told our correspondent on Monday that Justice Abang would return to Lagos on February 2, 2016 to deliver the judgment.

In the suit, which she filed in July last year, Oduah is praying the court to bar the Federal Government from investigating her over two armoured BMW cars reportedly procured at N255m in 2013 by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority during her tenure as Aviation Minister.

Justice Mohammed Yunusa of the same court, who has now been moved to Enugu, had on August 26, 2015 made an order of interim injunction barring the defendants from taking any action against Oduah pending the determination of the suit.

Apart from the AGF, also joined as respondents in the suit are the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission; the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission; and the Inspector General of Police.

Oduah alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress government had perfected plans to use the EFCC, ICPC, the AGF and the police to persecute and humiliate her under the guise of fighting an anti-graft war.
She also alleged that the APC government had perfected plans to prosecute prominent members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, including herself, on trumped-up charges in a Lagos State government-controlled court.
She urged the court to stop the defendants from being used against her by the Federal Government.

But the AGF and the Inspector General of Police, in their preliminary objection to the suit, described Oduah’s suit as hypothetical, saying she had not established any cause of action against them, as she did not prove that she had been invited, arrested or detained by the AGF and the IGP.

Their lawyer, Mr. T.A. Gazali, also challenged the court’s jurisdiction on the grounds that the alleged violation of Oduah’s right did not take place in Lagos.

“From the whole of the applicant’s averments, there is nowhere she mentioned that her right was or is being breached by the respondents within the territorial space called Lagos,” Gazali argued.

On its own part, the EFCC, through its counsel, Mr. G.K. Latana, also described Oduah’s suit as baseless and speculative, urging the court to dismiss it.

But Oduah’s lawyer, Mr. Ajibola Oluyede, urged the court to discountenance the defendants’ preliminary objections, insisting that “the respondents cannot choose for the applicant where to file her application if she has a choice.”

Nine years after preferring the charges of alleged diversion of the Plateau State’s N1.126bn ecological funds against a former governor of the state, Joshua Dariye, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission finally opened its case before a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Gudu, Abuja, on Monday.

The trial began with a Supreme Court’s judgment delivered on February 27, 2015, laying to rest an interlocutory application filed by Dariye and which had stalled the trial since it was filed in 2007.

The apex court after dismissing Dariye’s appeal in the judgment ordered Dariye, who was the Plateau State governor between May 29, 1999 and May 18, 2004, to submit himself for trial.

Dariye, who is currently a senator representing Plateau Central, dressed in a brown kaftan, and looked unruffled as the first prosecution witness testified in court on Monday.

The prosecution called its first witness, Musa Sunday, who narrated to the court, presided over by Justice Adebukola Banjoko, how Dariye allegedly diverted the state’s N1.126bn ecological funds.

Sunday, a detective with the EFCC, said he was involved in the investigation into how Dariye allegedly diverted Plateau State’s funds while serving as governor.

The witness said investigation by the EFCC operatives revealed that the former governor had, in 2001, applied for the ecological funds in the name of his state but collected the money in person and lodged it with the Abuja branch of the All States Trust Bank Plc (now defunct).

The witness added that the bank manager, allegedly acting on Dariye’s instructions paid N100m in the name of ‘PDP South-West.” The money he said was later traced to a company – Marine Float Nigeria Limited – allegedly owned by former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar.

Sunday, who was led in evidence by the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), said efforts to ensure that the firm refunded the money failed.

He said Dariye instructed the payment of N178.8m to an unregistered company – Ebenezer Retnan Venture Limited, which was later discovered to belong to the former governor.

He said investigation also revealed that Dariye ordered the payment of N80m from the ecological funds to the Permanent Secretary in the Ecological Fund Office, Kingsley Nkumeh.

The witness said although the EFCC later recovered the N80m from Nkumeh, he fled the country on learning that he was to be prosecuted.

He said Nkumeh had yet to return to the country.

Sunday added that Dariye paid N250m to a firm – Pinnacle Communications – owned by a contractor to the Plateau State Government.

He told the court that the decision to investigate Dariye was informed by a request by the London Metropolitan Police for Nigeria’s assistance in investigating some parties and companies linked with the former governor.

The witness said, “We invited Pinnacle Communications and the representative of the company actually confirmed collecting the N250m, but told us he is a contractor of the Plateau State Government.

“The N80m paid to Union Homes turned out to have been paid to a Permanent Secretary, Ecological Funds Office, Kingsley Nkumeh.

“When interviewed, he said that was his share for facilitating the payment of the ecological funds to the state. The said amount was recovered by the EFCC from the Permanent Secretary of Ecological Funds Office.

“Charges were later prepared for him to be charged to court in Lagos. He was granted an administrative bail; he resigned and left the country. Our investigation at Union Homes revealed that the cheque was cleared into an account owned by the Permanent Secretary, Nkumeh.

“The bank gave us the mandate card of the Permanent Secretary, into whose account the N80m was paid. The N176.8m was traced to Ebenezer Retnan Venture’s account domiciled at All States Trust Bank. From investigation at the Corporate Affairs Commission, we found it was not registered. There was no record of the company’s existence.

“The N100m paid to the PDP South-West was traced to Marine Float Limited. The mandate we received from the bank showed that Marine Float is owned by a former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Efforts at recovering this money have been going on. We did not succeed in recovering it.”

The court proceedings were interrupted by an outage.

Sunday, also in the course of his testimony, narrated how the bank, All States Trust Bank Plc (now defunct), aided the former governor to lodge the cheque into his (Dariye’s) account instead of the state government’s accounts.

The witness said, “The CBN cheque and the handwritten disbursement letter were recovered and another additional type-written disbursement letter by the defendant to the bank’s branch manager was all recovered.

“When we recovered those documents and cheques from CBN, we traced it to where it came from. Investigation led us to the Ecological Funds Unit, under the Presidency. At the Ecological Funds Unit, we interviewed one Mr. Adewusi, who told us that there was a time the Plateau State Government applied for ecological funds for ecological problem in the state, and approval was given for N1.126bn.

“And that before the cheque was prepared, a payment voucher covering the said amount, which had other documents attached to it, were prepared and audited, at the end of which payment was made.

“When the cheque was ready for collection, the defendant and his orderly, one Inspector Victor, went to the Ecological Funds Office and, upon instruction by the defendant, the aide signed for the cheque and the defendant took the cheque to All States Trust Bank, Abuja.

“Investigation revealed that in the office of the bank manager, the defendant instructed the bank manager how the money should be disbursed to some individuals and companies. The bank’s branch manager complied with the defendant’s instruction.

“Instead of the money to be paid into any of the Plateau State Government’s accounts, the bank used its own bank accounts to clear the cheque and disbursed to individuals and companies as instructed by the defendant.

“Copies of his instructions, both type written and handwritten were made available to us during investigation.”

Sunday is expected to resume his testimony today (Tuesday) by 10am.

The EFCC, in 2007, preferred money laundering and charges bordering on the diversion of the ecological funds against Dariye.

Senator Shehu Sani (APC, Kaduna Central Zone) has said that over $200 billion was being stashed away in the United Arab Emirates, UAE, specifically, its global financial hub, Dubai, by corrupt Nigerians.

Buhari, last week in UAE, signed a “Judicial Agreements on Extradition, Transfer of Sentenced Persons, Mutual Legal Assistance on Criminal Matters, and Mutual Legal Assistance on Criminal and Commercial Matters, which includes the recovery and repatriation of stolen wealth.”

Senator Sani said he was making the revelation from the point of strength as the chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign and Domestic Debts, as well as Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Sani, who was fielding questions from journalists after women supporters from his political ward paid him a solidarity visit at one of his campaign offices in Kaduna, told reporters that any corrupt person warming to President Muhammadu Buhari for cover would be exposed, investigated and prosecuted.

He said: “Corrupt Nigerians have stashed unbelievable amount of monies in Dubai alone in the name of estates acquisition, purchase of exotic houses and business partnership in the last 16 years. Some have stashed raw cash. This is why the US, and Europe are making conditions for laundering of money into their countries very difficult.

“These crooks have now found it conducive to use the Middle East and South East Asia as their destinations. They use names of their cronies, family members and friends to siphon public funds out of Nigeria.

“Some of them are APC members, who had their political upbringing in the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

“Sooner than later those who are parading themselves as Buhari’s friends, but are corrupt, will be interrogated, prosecuted because the President does not know friend or relation as far as the fight against corruption is concerned.”

“It was based on the information on the quantity and quality of the assets of corrupt Nigerians, that President Buhari had to sign that agreement with UAE at Abu Dhabi. I can tell you that it was smart and patriotic move.

“Let me advise the President to steer clear of hypocrites, because it is better to live with an enemy than hypocrite because hypocrite derives joy from stabbing one’s back.

“Over $200 billion Dollars are stashed away from Nigeria to Dubai alone. This may the monies stolen since in the past 20 years. I am not talking about estates and bonds and other securities bought with Nigeria stolen money.

“Buhari is going to recover all these monies and assets with the help of UAE.

“If you notice now, since the agreement, some of the corrupt persons are now rushing to Dubai to effect changes in the ownerships of the ill-gotten assets. But, they are just wasting their time.

”President Buhari needs the support of all Nigerians to wipe out corruption from the country. The President is on rescue mission. He needs our support.

“We cannot sit down idly and watch people sabotaged Buhari, and I can tell you that since Buhari went to Dubai, there were three attempts to sabotage Buhari’s government.

“The first one was that they planted a story in newspapers that there was crisis in Buhari’s government because he went to Dubai;

“The second one was that they planted fake lists of Nigerians that have property in Dubai, while we were waiting for the original list of those who have houses in Dubai. And the third one was to sponsor foreign media to discredit Buhari’s economic policies”, he said.

Earlier, leader of the women group, Hajiya Azumi Madugu, hailed Sani as friend of the poor and an enemy of oppression.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has filed fresh 22 charges against an ex-Niger Delta militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, and 12 others.

The charges, which were filed on Friday at a Federal High Court in Lagos, bordered on stealing, advanced fee fraud and money laundering to the tune of N22,765,900,000.

The fresh charges were filed eight days after Justice Ibrahim Buba ordered the arrest of Tompolo for his failure to appear on January 14, 2016 to take his plea on a separate 40 counts of alleged N34bn fraud earlier filed against him and nine others by the EFCC.

In the fresh charges, which had yet to be assigned to any judge, the EFCC listed 25 witnesses that will testify against Tompolo and his 12 co-suspects when the trial begins.

Among the witnesses are seven EFCC investigators, officials of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, officials of the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, and officials of the Bureau of Public Procurement.

Also to testify against the suspects are officials of four commercial banks including Access Bank, First Bank, Zenith Bank Plc and United Bank for Africa Plc.

Those to be arraigned alongside Tompolo in the fresh 22 counts is a former Director-General of NIMASA, Patrick Akpobolokemi, whose four brothers – Victor, Nobert, Emmanuel and Clement – who are still at large, were alleged to have aided the suspects to commit the fraud.

The other suspects are Kime Engozu, Josephine Otuaga, Rita Uruakpa and Pondi Kestin.

Also joined as defendants in the charges are seven companies – Mieka Dive Training Institute Ltd/GTE, Oyeinteke Global Network Ltd, Wabod Global Resources Ltd, Boloboere Properties Estate Ltd, Gokaid Marine Oil and Gas Ltd, Muhaabix Global Services Ltd and Watershed Associated Resources.

The suspects were said to have fraudulently converted various sums, running into over N22.7bn, stolen from NIMASA, to their personal use between December 12, 2014 and April 10, 2015.

They were also accused of defrauding the Federal Government by making false representations, which they knew to be untrue, in order to obtain money from the government.

The offences are said to be contrary to Section 8(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3)of the same Act.

The charge sheet, signed by Festus Keyamo, also indicated that the suspects violated various sections of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012 including its sections 15(3) and 18(a) and were liable to punishment under Section 15(3) of the same Act.

The suspects were also said to be liable to punishment under Section 1 (2) (c) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, Cap. M17, Laws of the Federation, 2004.

In count two, the EFCC alleged that the suspects “between the December 2, 2014 and April 10, 2015 in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this court, with intent to defraud, induced the Federal Government of Nigeria to deliver to you, the aggregate sum of N11, 900,000,000.00 by falsely pretending to the Federal Government of Nigeria that all that land and its appurtenances lying, being and situate at the Mieka Dive Training Institute, Kurutie, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, to be acquired by NIMASA for the temporary Campus of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Warri South-West Local Government Area, is free from any encumbrances, which representation you knew to be false, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section (1) (b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3)of the same Act.”

Akpobolokemi is scheduled to appear on Friday before Justice Saliu Saidu of a Federal High Court in Lagos, where he was first arraigned on December 3, 2015 alongside nine others on 30 counts of stealing and money laundering to the tune of N3.4bn.

His trial before Justice Buba, where he was arraigned along with five others on December 4, 2015 on 22 counts of alleged N2.6bn fraud, commenced last week with the EFCC calling three witnesses.

The case was adjourned till February 2, 2016.

Akpobolokemi is also scheduled to appear before Justice Buba on February 8, 2016 alongside nine others, including Tompolo, who was ordered to be arrested and produced in court on the hearing date.

Former presidential candidate of the defunct All Peoples Party (APP) Chief Olu Falae, who was allegedly accused of receiving N100m from the $2.1 billion arms money from the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Colonel Sambo Dasuki, in an interview said:
"I want to say with all emphasis that I never took even one naira from Dasuki. Beyond that, I want to assert that I never had any relationship with Dasuki. I knew Dasuki way back in 1986-87,when he was ADC to General Babagida and I was Secretary to the Federal Government. Since he left that government around 1987, I had no contact or dealing with him; absolutely none".
"The N100 million they are bandying about in the media, the one that I know about, it happened as follows: Chief Tony Anenih, a former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the PDP, phoned me late January last year and said he would like to see me; he would like to come from Abuja to see me in Akure. And he came. He came with someone, and I, too, invited somebody to be with me. The four of us were together in the meeting; and Chief Anenih  said they were observing that my party, SDP, had no presidential candidate and, therefore, they would want us to ask our supporters to vote for his own party’s candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan".
"I told him that, in principle, there was nothing wrong with the two parties collaborating, but that the collaboration must be a principled collaboration: it must be based on principles. I told him that there were certain things we desired the government to do but they had not done for the people, and that if we were going to support their candidate, they must commit themselves to make changes in those areas. He asked for the areas? I said number one, their party must be prepared to restructure Nigeria from the colossal unity system, and the best way of doing that was to fully implement the report of the National Conference 2014".
"Number two, that the party must commit itself to a policy of zero tolerance for corruption because I saw that corruption was monumental in what they were doing. Number three, I said the party in government must destroy Boko Haram and give stability to Nigeria. Number four, there was mass unemployment and youths were getting frustrated, that they must articulate programmes to create jobs for the unemployed. Number five, that I observed that the party in government was spending virtually our entire revenue on recurrent expenditure, that they must reduce recurrent expenditure so as to generate surpluses to finance capital development like roads, schools, hospitals, etc".
"Item number six, that if we accepted this tide and accepted them, then if the party won the election, we will expect reasonable participation in that government. And he said they were totally happy with all these strict conditions, that the conditions were acceptable to them; in fact, he said they were already implementing some of them. So, on that note, he returned to Abuja. But after he left, I decided to write to him in order to document this relationship. The letter I wrote to him, again I listed the six conditions which I had mentioned in our oral discussion. And three days later, he wrote back to me saying that he had consulted all the stakeholders of his party including the President and they were all happy to accept those conditions to work with the SDP in the election’s that were forthcoming".
"So, having accepted our conditions, I proceeded to Abuja to summon the meeting of my party executive and decision making organs and made the presentation to them. There was a very robust debate and, at the end of the debate, the executive committee of my party endorsed their request that we should work with Jonathan in the elections".

Some top officials of the civil service have been dismissed by the federal government for extorting money from 400 applicants and offering them employment illegally.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Mr. Lai Mohammed, made the disclosure on Saturday in Lagos during a meeting with some selected on-air-personalities.

The meeting was part of the minister’s five-day consultations with critical stakeholders in the media industry.

Mohammed said the affected officers were on Grade Level 17 in one of the parastatals in the ministry.

He said the officers had included the names of the applicants in the Integrated Payroll and Personnel System before the fraud was discovered.

Mohammed said, “The first scandal I met in one of the parastatals when I assumed office was the illegal employment of 400 people.

“This scandal started with very senior officers up to level 17 in that department. They sent out letters and text messages asking people to apply for jobs for a fee of N400, 000 and they were given letters of employment.

“They did not stop there. They invited these people to go and be captured on the IPPIS and they even took cameras to hotels to get them captured. At the end of the day, the bubble burst.

“One of the victims told these officials: ‘you cannot take my money and still disengage me. I have a valid letter. That is how we got to know that there is a dedicated account these people pay to.

“Of course, we dismissed these officials and we even handed them over to the police.”

The minister said the incident showed how faulty the IPPIS was and how it had been compromised by unscrupulous elements. He also said the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari was doing all it could to make the IPPIS tamper-proof and guide it from people who might want to load ghost workers on it.

He described on-air personalities as “very important” in the media industry and urged them to leverage on their platforms to educate the people on government’s policies. The minister said the current war against corruption was a war of survival for the nation and urged all Nigerians to give it the necessa

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, says corrupt politicians who are currently being probed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have no moral authority to claim their rights were denied when their alleged actions eroded other people’s rights and led to countless deaths and suffering.

Mohammed said it was absurd that after stealing the country blind, some corrupt politicians were busy claiming their rights were infringed on.

The minister said this during a visit to the Women FM 91.7 radio station in Arepo, Ogun State, on Thursday.

He said human rights claims would not stop President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption war, adding that the Federal Government was not selective in its anti-corruption war as being claimed because it was only logical that the Peoples Democratic Party which was in power for 16 years should be the focus of the corruption probes.

Using a Yoruba proverb to justify his position, Mohammed said, “ Eni ti o ba ni iyawo, ana e o le ku.” This simply means that an unmarried man cannot claim to lose an in-law.

He said, “The Federal Government is being criticised for infringing on human rights. This is not true. People who have stolen billions of naira have no moral authority to be claiming human rights when their theft left to the infringements of other people’s rights, deaths and suffering. We want Nigerians to weigh the matter. Fifty five Nigerians stole over N1.34tn in eight years. Should we now jetission the rights of 170 million Nigerians whose rights have been tampered with because of these few people who have stolen the country blind?

“When we start talking about human rights, we need to put the issue in the right perspectives. The granting of bail is at the discretion of the court of law and when there is a tendency that someone is likely to jump bail, such a right may be declined.”

Speaking on the report that two versions of the 2016 budget were presented to the National Assembly, Mohammed said the row was caused by ‘communication gap’ between the Presidency and the National Assembly.

He listed poor funding as one of the factors hindering the EFCC in prosecuting high-profile corruption cases.

He added, “While it takes just little time to prosecute an average offender, it takes seven years to prosecute a high-profile person for corruption charges. This is because the corrupt leaders can afford to hire the smartest lawyers which even the EFCC cannot afford to hire. Finance is crippling the operations of the anti-graft commission.”

In his remarks, the Chairman of WFM, Dr. Babatunde Okewale, hailed the Federal Government’s anti-corruption war, adding that it was unfortunate that women and children were the major victims of the public treasury looting.

“We would like the Ministry of Information to revamp the National Orientation Agency to help restore our cultural values and stop harmful cultural practices affecting women and the girl child,” he said.

Javier Mascherano has been sentenced to a year in prison but is unlikely to ever serve time in jail, after a verdict was reached in his tax evasion case. The Argentine has been fined €815,000 and handed a year's sentence for two counts of fiscal crimes committed in 2011 and 2012.

Mascherano has previously admitted to the offences, repaid the money owed and paid a hefty fine as recompense.

After such compliance with the investigation, the court is expected to grant the wish of Mascherano and his lawyer, David Aineto, in suspending the custodial sentence in exchange for a further fine.

The Barcelona star said in a statement released on Thursday: "I'm a professional sportsman and I don't know a lot about legal and financial matters.

Javier Mascherano's statement in full:
Today I have reached an agreement with the Spanish tax authorities, with a firm verdict agreed by all parties. Thus, with a resolution now for the legal matters and with the relief of having sorted my tax situation, I would like to make a brief statement.
After agreeing my move to Barcelona I contracted a specialist tax agency with well-known professionals that enjoy a great reputation. According to my situation they recommended me certain structures, all within the law, telling me that they were normal, transparent and accepted procedures.
I was assessed by these professionals from 2010 to 2014 I decided to change agency because of the proceedings I was facing, and with evidence that the problems may not be 'potential' but in fact very real. My new agency recommended that I pay the tax authorities the money they were claiming, presenting also a corrective payment.
Now, finally, after a long wait this agreement has arrived which allows me to relax again and go about my daily life.
I'm a professional sportsman and I don't know a lot about legal and financial matters.
Therefore I must rely on the people that manage these technical, and for me, complicated, issues.
All my career I have been an honest and responsible person... I will take this experience that has accosted me as another experience which I will leave stronger and calmed by the fact that I am once again within the law.

A Federal High Court in Lagos has remanded Mr. Kenneth Chiokwe, an alleged fake codeine cough syrup maker in prison following his arraignment by National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC for producing fake cough syrup.

Prosecuting counsel, Umar Shamaki told the court that Chiokwe imported fake products.
Defence counsel, Chukwudi Nneke in his bail application, urged the court to admit the accused to bail because the offence was a bailable one.
The prosecution did not oppose to the bail application but prayed the court to impose stringent conditions.
Justice Dagat, in a short ruling, granted the accused bail in the sum of N1 million and two sureties in like sum.
One of the sureties must be a relative of the accused and the second a landed property owner within the court’s jurisdiction, with evidence of three years tax clearance.
The court ordered the remand of the accused until his bail conditions are met.

The case was adjourned to April 5 for trial.

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, has challenged the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed to make public names of the 15 former governors and 55 Nigerians that he claimed stole N1.34 trillion between 2006 and 2013 or keep his mouth shut permanently.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said “The reality is that the All Progressives Congress (APC) Federal Government has destroyed the economy within eight months in power and rather than look for solutions to the problems facing Nigeria, Lai Mohammed and his cohorts are branding bogus figures about stolen money just to cover up their lack of solution to the country’s economic problems.”

The governor, who also described as disgraceful, bringing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh to court in handcuff, said; “Even the masterminds of Mandala and Nyanya bomb blasts, Kabiru Sokoto and Aminu Sadiq Ogwuche were not handcuffed when they were arraigned in court.”

Fayose said it was funny that close to one year after it won the presidential election, the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC federal government was still operating as if it was campaigning for votes.

The governor said: “They are turning governance to Nollywood, such that when one movie is about to end, they release another one. As it appears that the $2.1 billion arms deal movie is getting to an end, Lai Mohammed introduced another movie titled N1.34 trillion loot.

“Unfortunately for them this time around, Nigerians have become tired of watching the Federal Government movies, they now want reality. Nigerians are now aware of the scam in the $2.1 billion arms deal movie having seen that the amount those already charged to court were charged with is not more than N10 billion and $2.1 billion is over N600 billion.

“Therefore, Lai Mohammed must either tell Nigerians details of the 15 former governors and 55 people that he claimed stole N1.34 trillion, where the stolen money is kept and bring back the money or apologise to Nigerians for lying.”

While describing the persistent claim by the federal government that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) destroyed Nigeria for 16 years as hypocritical, Governor Fayose said Nigerians must begin to ask which party majority of those presently ruling the country under the APC government were between 1999 and 2014.

“Majority of those who ran the Federal Government between 1999 and 2003 under the PDP are in the APC government today. President, vice president, ministers, governors, senators and House of Reps members who were part of the PDP government are now in APC. Yet, APC keeps telling Nigerians that PDP ruined the country. This hypocrisy must stop,” he said.

The governor, who insisted that due process of the law must be followed in fighting corruption, noted that disobedience to court
orders itself is a criminal offence that is more grievous than corruption.

He said no amount of harassment and intimidation will silence opposition in the country, saying President Buhari and his men should
rather get used to the reality that opposition must exist in a democracy.
