There was pandemonium on Monday at the Ibafo Police Division, Lagos state as armed robbers shot a security guard to death in front of the station.

The deceased identified only as Kayode, a member of the Oodua People’s Congress, was among residents who responded to the distress call of a couple abducted by the robbers in their Landcruiser SUV.
The couple, Oluwakunmi Ayodeji, an engineer, and his pregnant wife, Oyin, were reportedly returning from a maternity centre behind the police station when they were attacked by the gang.
Policemen at the Ibafo division were said to have hurriedly shut the gate to the station and shunned calls for help.
The robbers, after getting to the Lotto end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, reportedly shot Oluwakunmi in the eye region and abandoned him and his wife on the road.
A family friend of the couple, Bisola Olojede, said she had taken the couple to the maternity centre where Oyin had a scan and they were leaving the centre for a hospital in Ikeja when the robbers struck.
Olojede said, “The incident happened around 10pm. The woman, who is my friend, was pregnant and her doctor recommended that she should do a scan.
“I was called to take them to a private maternity centre in Ibafo. From the maternity centre, we decided to go to a hospital in Ikeja. As her husband opened the vehicle doors with a remote, she entered and sat at the front, while I took my seat at the back.
“Her husband had just entered the SUV when a man suddenly appeared and started dragging the steering with him. I alighted from the car and called for help.
“I saw a man and I begged him to assist us, but he ignored me. I never knew he was among the robbers,” Olojede added, stating that she moved away when she saw that the robbers were armed.
She disclosed to The Punch that a few minutes later, they drove away with Oluwakunmi and his wife.
Olojede explained that she ran after the vehicle and started calling for help, adding that some residents, including Kayode, joined her in chasing the vehicle.
When the robbers got to the front of the Ibafo Police Station, they were said to have stopped and fired into the crowd of pursuers.
Olojede said, “The bullet hit one of us and the man died immediately. The policemen heard the gunshot and rushed out. I started begging them to help us, saying there was a pregnant woman in critical condition in the vehicle.
“There were two of them, a man and a woman. But they shunned me. I called my husband on the telephone and told him what happened. He said I should call the police and I told him I was with them but they were not doing anything. When the police heard that, they quickly shut their gate,” she added.
The policemen were said to have opened their gate and invited Olojede to make statements.
“Later, they asked if there was anybody that could identify the man that was shot dead and two men came forward and said he was a member of the OPC and his name was Kayode.
“They then put him in the same van they were supposed to use to chase the robbers, preparing him for the mortuary. They started asking me all kinds of irrelevant questions.
“They told their DPO on the telephone that they had attended to me,” she added.
Oluwakunmi’s friend, Jejelaye Gbadamosi, said he had been admitted in an undisclosed hospital.
“They dropped them around Lotto, and drove off in their jeep. It was a Good Samaritan that assisted them. My friend and his wife are in different hospitals. The bullet pierced him around the eye,” Gbadamosi reportedly disclosed.
He said they suspect that the robbers came out from a brothel close to the maternity area.
“The place is notorious. The police did not also do well. They didn’t respond until their DPO called them,” he added.
A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said despite witnessing the killing, the Ibafo Police Division did not send signals to surrounding stations.
However, confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Ogun State Command, Muyiwa Adejobi, denied that the police absconded and shut its gate against the residents.
“The couple, who were abducted, were rescued in the Redemption Camp area, and they have regained their freedom. They are being treated in a clinic.
“We have a confirmation that somebody was shot dead around the police station and the police heard a woman calling for help; and she was attended to.
“Nobody shut any gate; it is not possible,” the PPRO said.

A legal practitioner, Barrister Ayodele Owoka has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over allegations of bribery.

Owoka, 47, was arrested on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at the Commission’s office in Ikoyi, Lagos as he attempted to bribe a team of operatives investigating a case of contract inflation, abuse of office, stealing, embezzlement and misappropriation of funds at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, Ondo State.

Upon his arrest, the suspect confessed that he offered the operatives N1.2 Million which was allegedly given to him by the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. O. A. Omotosho, to bribe the team to soft pedal on their investigations.

Ayodele confessed that Omotosho gave him a total sum of N1.5 Million but that he kept N300,000 for his personal use and offered the operatives the balance of N1.2Million as bribe.

Confirming the arrest, EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren said that the suspect would soon be arraigned.

The Imo State Government has concluded plans to relocate about 5,000 shoemakers, of its indigenes resident in Aba, Abia State back to Owerri to run the state-owned shoe industry.
The state’s Commissioner for Industry and Non-Formal Sector, Mrs. Ugochi Nnana Okoro, announced this at a media briefing in Owerri, the state capital. She said the move would make the state a destination of choice in shoes industry, just as the state government has also advocated for the abolition of federal ministries in the states for their none viability.
Mrs. Okoro, who is also the supervising commissioner for Agriculture, said the arrangement would also encourage locally- made goods as well as boost the economy of the state.
According to her, all products made in the state must be labeled “Madein- Imo.’. She said government had acquired modern equipment to run the Standard Shoe Industry owned by the state. The commissioner said the industry had been producing high quality sandals for primary school pupils in the state.
She said that due to the numerous projects being executed by the current government in the state, it was not possible for the government to establish more industries.
Okoro said that some of the moribund government- owned industries would be reactivated and leased out to the private sector. Source

Also being held is the proprietress of the Umunna Motherless Babies’ Home in Onitsha South Local Government.
She was arrested with another suspect, Mrs. Bassey Gabriel, from Calabar in Cross River State, following the discovery of a three-day-old and a three-month-old babies in their possession.
Police spokesman Emeka Chukwuemeka told reporters yesterday in Awka that the police were tipped off by terminus workers in Onitsha.
The Nation learnt that Mrs. Izuora had been in the business for sometime. Although she claimed she had done it only once.
One of the babies at the home has been missing since December. He is yet to be found.
The third suspect, Nkolo Anthony, is a sister to Mrs. Gabriel’s sister.
Mrs. Izuora told The Nation that she paid N150,000 to the facilitator of the babies in Calabar, who also works in the Cross River State Ministry of Women Affairs.

The Russian president would command huge military force if he decided to intervene in Ukraine, but he has no pretext yet

President Vladimir Putin nurses a visceral suspicion of revolutions in former Soviet Republics. For him, the downfall of Ukraine's previous pro-Russian government in the Orange Revolution of 2004 was not a genuine popular upheaval, but a Western plot designed to clip Moscow's wings.
He doubtless places the latest revolution in Kiev in the same category.
No-one who stood in Independence Square last week and watched thousands of people defy snipers' bullets will ever believe that these protesters were brainwashed lackeys of the CIA.
But the Kremlin cares little for fact or reality. What matters is Mr Putin's perception - and he is psychologically programmed to conclude that whenever people march against a Russian ally, they must be the hapless playthings of Western intelligence.
Mr Putin cannot allow himself to believe that the Kremlin's favoured strongmen in former Soviet Republics are actually unpopular. He will never concede that millions of Ukrainians genuinely want to break free of Russia's orbit and join the European Union. His world view rests on spurning these notions - even when they happen to be true.
So Mr Putin will regard the February Revolution as another plot to extend Western influence inside Russia's traditional domain.

How might he respond? One option would be to send in the tanks and occupy the Russian-speaking regions of eastern and southern Ukraine, supposedly for the protection of the local population. After all, Russia thinks that "bandits" and "Nazis" run the new government in Kiev.
Georgia suffered an invasion of this kind in 2008, ending with Russia's de facto annexation of the regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. But that operation lasted only five days, and Mr Putin had been given the ideal pretext when Mikheil Saakashvili, then Georgia's president, made the fantastic error of attacking the capital of South Ossetia.
Any invasion of Ukraine would be a far bigger undertaking, involving much greater risk - and, although some in Crimea may be seeking to provide one, no obvious pretext has emerged yet.
Russia has ordered a series of military exercises, placing its airforce and combat units near the Ukrainian frontier on high alert. A barrage of rhetorical threats has accompanied these moves.
But if a real operation was intended, this would not be announced. Instead of using force, Mr Putin, the old KGB officer, is far more likely to respond to events by exerting Russian power in the shadows.
The Kremlin has immense leverage over Ukraine, controlling the country's energy supplies and providing a vital market for its exports. Moreover, Russia has a web of ties to the political and business elite. Mr Putin will probably decide to use this covert network of influence to ensure that Ukraine's upheaval ends in a way that Russia can tolerate.

The names of the students who lost their lives in the Tuesday attack on Federal Government College, FGC, Bunu Yadi, Yobe State by Boko Haram militants have been revealed.
43 students were killed. Hostels, classrooms and more than 40 houses were burnt during the attack.
The attackers reportedly hurled explosives into student hostels, sprayed gunfire into rooms and hacked some students to death. Others were burned alive.
Adamu Garba, who teaches at a secondary school attached to the college, said the attackers first set ablaze the college administrative block and then moved to the hostels, where they locked students in and started firebombing the buildings.
At one hostel, he said, “students were trying to climb out of the windows and they were slaughtered like sheep by the terrorists who slit their throats. Others who ran were gunned down”. He said students who could not escape were burned alive.
Many of the students are still unaccounted for. Below are the names of 24 students confirmed dead.

Uneasy calm reigns in  Onitsha, Anambra State as child theft has assumed a dangerous dimension in the commercial city with the emergence of a syndicate that allegedly steals  children from Calabar, Cross River State and uses  Onitsha as its sales point.
However, luck ran out on two suspected female members of the syndicate yesterday when they were apprehended at separate spots  by policemen attached to the Okpoko Police Division at  Akwa Ibom Park axis  along Onitsha-Owerri Road after an unidentified  woman was arrested for allegedly stealing two babies from Calabar and selling  them in Onitsha.
Another woman suspected to be a member of the child trafficking syndicate was also arrested by operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) attached to Okpoko Police Division at the Calabar Motor Park on Onitsha-Owerri Road.
Daily Sun gathered that the suspects, who were undergoing interrogation at the office of Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mr. Emeka Ugwu, were arrested following a tip off by some staff of the Akwa Ibom Motor Park and passersby, who suspected their movements.
According to one of the witnesses simply identified as Obinna, one of the suspects was a regular visitor to the park, and  had always come on a weekly basis with different children after which she would return to Calabar, leaving the children behind.
Obinna said nemesis caught up with the women when one of them came into the park in a vehicle belonging to the Transport Company of Anambra State (TRACAS) with a newly born baby with  blood stains.
“The lady comes to the park almost every week; at times at two weeks interval and we discovered that each time she appeared, she had two or three children mostly day old and one-week old children. There was a day she carried a baby with stain of blood showing that the child had  just been delivered. So, today (yesterday) she came  from Calabar and because we have been monitoring her, we noticed that she had two children with her. But when she resurfaced  to board a bus back to Calabar without those kids, that was when we confirmed our suspicion and invited the police,” he said.

An Oredo Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Benin City, Edo State, yesterday remanded a 65-year-old man, Benjamin Amadi in prison custody for allegedly defiling a 9-year-old girl.
The accused person was alleged to have committed the offence on January 13, 2014 at a house between 1st and 2nd East Circular Road, Benin City.
He however pleaded not guilty to the one count charge preferred against him, which is punishable under Section 218 of the Criminal Code.
The presiding Chief Magistrate, Peter Asemota said the accused person’s bail would be considered in the course of the trial.
In a reaction, coordinator of the Edo State Child Protection Network (CPN), Jennifer Ero, said the fight against sexual and other related forms of abuse on children is a continuous one that must be won and called on citizens and residents of the state and other stakeholders to be committed to the cause with a view to discouraging child molesters, even as she urged them to report such cases to the police for necessary.

by Gunmen and Kidnappers appear to be on the prowl again in Abia State as they have kidnapped two market women and a six-month old baby boy.
They perpetrated their nefarious act by feigning to be operators of taxi cabs and motorcyclists Aba, the commercial nucleus of the state, and Umuahia, the state capital.
Yesterday, two women travelling to Uzuakoli market in Bende Local Government Area of the state were kidnapped and taken to an unknown destination.
Their families are now in agony, misery and guessing where the destination was.
One of the women, simply identified as Mrs. Nkechi, was said to be a nursing mother of an eightmonth old baby.
She trades in garri and other allied food stuff and was going to the local market for stock, not knowing she was to be a victim of kidnappers posing as motorists.
Reliable sources disclosed that though the women live in Umuahia, they hailed from Ebonyi State.
Eyewitness accounts disclosed that the kidnap suspects were seen speeding towards the Umuahia/ Aba/Enugu expressway after their operation.
Also, on Monday, some gunmen reportedly abducted a six- month old baby boy at Amapu Umuaja village in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State.
It was gathered that at about 9.30pm on the day of the incident when most villagers had gone to bed, two gunmen on a motorcycle stormed the compound of the victim’s parents, broke into their house and forcefully snatched the baby from his mother, Mrs. Peace Chikezie.
The whereabouts of the baby is unknown.
After snatching the baby from the mother, the gunmen reportedly fled, and in an apparent move to stop the woman from alerting other villagers, they forcefully collected her mobile phone.
It was after the hoodlums had fled with the baby that the mother raised the alarm and a search team was set to comb the entire neighbourhood to see if the marauders could be apprehended, but all to no avail.
Nobody in the area was able to adduce reason for the baby’s abduction, but there was a general belief that ritual for money making could be the motivating factor.
Some villagers who spoke to our correspondent described the incident as barbaric and satanic, stressing that this was the first time such would be happening in the community.
Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, Geoffrey Ogbonna, could not be a reached as at the time of filing this report.
However, a senior police officer who would not want his name in print confirmed the incident. He said the matter had been reported at the Umuoba Divisional Police Headquarters for proper investigation, adding that police were already on top of the matter to recover the child and also apprehend the hoodlums.

An applicant, Samuel Maina, appeared yesterday in an Upper Area Court at Karu, Abuja, for touching a woman’s breast and snatching her bag.
Maina was charged with gross indecency and theft.
Police Prosecutor Phillip Akugo told the court that Alice Ujah reported the accused and two others now at large to the Asokoro Police Station on Febuary 24.
Akugo said the complainant said she boarded a taxi with the accused and two others from AYA to Kuruduma Village, where she resides.
Akugo said:“ Ujah, who was the only woman in the taxi, in her statement, said the accused and one of his accomplice started to touch her breasts while the other searched her bag.’’
He said they made away with her N34,000 and threatened to beat her, if she raised the alarm.
The prosecutor said the driver, who was also an accomplice, drove Ujah to an unknown place and stripped her naked.
Theft and gross indecency contravene Sections 286 and 285 of the Penal Code.
If convicted, Maina faces eight years in prison or an option of fine or both.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Judge, Umar Kagarko, admitted the accused to N50,000 bail and one surety.
Kagarko ordered that the surety must be a respected person ,who must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction.
He adjourned the case till April 14.

The police officer died on the spot
A mobile policeman in uniform was on Wednesday crushed to death by a trailer at the gate of the main branch of First Bank,
near Bichi road,  in Jos.
Witnesses say the police officer died on the spot as the vehicle smashed part of his head.
The trailer was coming from the Plateau State House is Assembly.
A witness, Ladi Emmanuel, told PREMIUM TIMES that the police officer was on a motorcycle going to his place of assignment.
Sources say that the victim attempted to overtake the trailer at a bend.
The victim was immediately rushed to the Plateau State specialist hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival.
The driver of the vehicle was arrested by the police and taken away from the scene for further interrogation.
The incident created vehicular traffic within the area, which houses several major business including the Jos branch of the Central Bank.
Meanwhile, colleagues of the victims who were on duty within the vicinity molested other road users.
The Plateau State government had in early 2012 banned the use of motorcycles within Jos metropolis.
However, some uniformed officials, including the police and security officers in charge of enforcing the ban, have continued to defy the directive, riding their motorcycles in the prohibited areas.

Three days after the kidnapping of Inengite Nitabai, President Goodluck Jonathan’s adopted father, Otuoke, the President’s country home, has literally been turned into a military zone.
It was learnt that there had been massive deployment of crack team of soldiers and riot policemen in the community from Abuja.
On Wednesday, security forces were said to have taken over every part of the community and its sister communities, combing the creeks frantically to fish out the abductors.
An eyewitness, who craved anonymity, said residents were intimidated by the large troops, saying it was “like medicine after death.”
The eyewitness said, “It is high time the relevant authorities did what was needed to check kidnapping and other vicious crimes in the area. For instance, in Otuoke, for more than seven months now, there is no electricity supply in the area.
“From 7pm, every household resorts to generators. The cacophony of noise arising from those generators can be deafening. Probably if the whole area was quiet, the gunmen could not have successfully carried out their dastardly act without being noticed.
“Apart from the issue of electricity, unemployment is another issue of serious concern. In a situation where some people live in opulence and others live from hand to mouth, you can appreciate the consequences.”
As of Wednesday, the family of the victims were still apprehensive about the abduction of the 70-year-old compound chief of the Jonathan’s family.
Their fear was born out of the fact that more than 72 hours after the abduction, the kidnappers had yet to call any member of the family.

As early as 7.00a.m. on Monday, February 24, 2014, thousands of Imo women stormed the streets of Owerri to protest against the PDP and its leaders over the provocative statements they had made during their party’s rally last weekend, with the women saying that the PDP leaders had come to provoke Imo people.

The women who were chanting war songs with their brooms also went to the Dan Anyiam Stadium where the PDP rally was held and swept the stadium claiming that they had swept away the foot-prints of the PDP leaders and members who were there last weekend.

As they swept the stadium, they were heaping curses on the PDP accusing the party of mismanaging the resources of the state for 12 years, and with nothing to show for it.

From the stadium, the women marched along the major streets of Owerri including wetheral, Okigwe and Mbaise roads. But before leaving the stadium, the leader of the women, Chief Mrs. Josephine Udorji said the PDP leaders came to remind Imo people about the scars they left on their bodies when they governed the state for 12 years, expressing surprise that the president could attend such a rally to receive those who have no electoral value again.

Other women leaders, who addressed the crowd included Mrs. Getrude Oduka and Mrs. Tina Adike and they said that they allowed the PDP rally to hold because the president came, and said that they would not allow such again.

The women also marched to the Government House to register their solidarity to the Governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha where, Chief Uche Nwosu, the Honourable Commissioner of Lands and Urban Development addressed them and told them that Imo people know who is who and would speak loudly and clearly in 2015. He thanked the women for their unflinching support.

For refusing to give him N2m gratification, The Caretaker Committee Chairman, Ariaria International market, Mr. Lucky Akubueze has illegally dissolved the elected executives of the market as well as threatened to use his connection with the governor to descend heavily on them.
 Mr. Akubueze who is a close relative of the governor of Abia state, Chief T.A Orji was also accused of using the Abia State Vigilante Service popularly referred to as Bakassi Boys to harass the elected officials of the market which according to them is unacceptable.
The City Reporters gathered that trouble started when on resumption as the elected executives of the A-D sub union of Ariaria market, Mr. Akubueze demanded a gratification of N2m from the traders with a threat to make things difficult for them should they fail to comply.
In a petition addressed to the Abia state commissioner for Commerce and Industry and signed by the chairman of A-D sub union, Chief Cyril Jubulu, the secretary, Mrs. Eugenia Adikuru and 23 others obtained by The City Reporters, the traders said Mr. Akubueze constantly boast that as a relation to the Abia state governor; he can do anything in the market and go unpunished.
 Part of the petition read, “We wish to inform you that against the wishes of members of the zone and not minding the attendant consequences, Mr. Lucky Akubueze, acting above his powers purportedly dissolved an elected executive of A-D sub union and announced the splitting of the zone into two.
 “As elected executives and members of the zone, we reject in its entirety the purported dissolution of the executives of our zone because Mr. Lucky Akubueze as an appointed chairman has no  powers to dissolve elected officials whose tenure have not ended.
 “Against the lies he told us that he was acting on behalf of the governor, we are aware that government did not send him to demand a gratification of N2m from the zone, the rejection of which is the bedrock of his illegitimate actions.”
 They also lamented how Mr. Akubueze purportedly prepared placards that falsely convey the message that the traders were against the PDP government in Abia State, describing the action as the height of treachery.
 When contacted, Akubueze denied the allegations saying no zone in the market had up to N2m in its account presently and wondered why he should be accused of demanding money the zone does not have.
He however said the zone was divided into two because of its large size but reaffirmed his resolution to deal with the traders as alleged.
 “In fact I would not because of the allegation deny the fact that (Gov) T.A (Orji) is my brother. To be candid, one of these days, I am going to seek audience with him and after tabling this matter before him; I would then come and deal with these recalcitrant former executives of the zone,” he boasted.

BEVERLY HILLS, February 25, (THEWILL) -  Borno State Students, under the umbrella of the National Union of Borno State Students (NUBOSS), Tuesday called on President Goodluck Jonathan to stop blaming the state governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, for the escalation of the Boko Haram insurgency in the state.

Calling on the President to pay a visit to the state in order  to appreciate what the people are going through, the students said

the president would only understand the frustration of Governor Shettima “if he pays a visit to Bama, Gwoza, Konduga or any other parts of the state where the insurgents have wreaked wanton havoc.”

Making the call at a media briefing  in Maiduguri, the state capital, the National Chairman of NUBOSS. Comrade Isah Mohammed Biu, said though President Jonathan  has denied the rumour of a plan to replace Shettima with a military administrator, there won’t be such call in the first instance President Jonathan had  visited the affected parts of the state.

The students therefore said the Federal Government, rather than Governor Shettima, should take responsibility for the escalation of the crisis,  saying with the declaration of emergency rule in the state, “ the security of the state automatically shifted to the Federal Government.”

A Federal High Court, sitting in Enugu, has convicted and sentenced one Gift Onyegam to 10 years imprisonment without an option of fine for duping a blind teacher, Rosemary Iheanacho, of  N830, 000 on the pretext that he would help her son secure employment in an oil company.
The convict, who pleaded not guilty, was also ordered to pay the sum of N711, 000 in restitution to the victim.
A statement by the Head, Media & Publicity, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Wilson Uwajaren, on Tuesday in Abuja, said Onyegam, was arrested in 2013 following a complaint by the victim, and was prosecuted by the EFCC on four counts of conspiracy and obtaining by false pretence.
Iheanacho was tricked into believing the scam when, in July 2012, she received a call from one Patrick Abah whom she met at a National Youth Service Scheme Orientation Camp in 2009.
He told her that he could help her secure employment with Shell Petroleum Development Company through his in-law, Okoh Ayabaye, a purported Engineer with the oil major in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The victim got interested and told them that her son needed employment and she  proceeded to pay various sums amounting to N830, 000 into three bank accounts provided by the tricksters.

A lagos butcher, Oye Adeleke has been charged with rape by the Abule Egba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
He is alleged to have defiled his customer's child and is facing a two-count charge of child defilement and attempt to escape from police custody.
The Prosecutor, Insp Rachael Williams, told the court that Adeleke committed the offences on Jan.19 at Tinubu Market, Gowon Estate, Iyana Ipaja, Lagos. Williams said that the accused defiled the 14-year-old, when she was sent to the market by her mother.
“The accused told the girl that her mother kept meat in his freezer, and asked her to go and take it. “When the girl wanted to open the freezer, the accused used a handkerchief to cover her mouth to prevent her from shouting while he raped her,” Williams said.
She added that the accused attempted to escape from the police custody when he was arrested. She said that the offence contravened Sections 21 and 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused, however pleaded not guilty. The Magistrate, Mr Tajudeen Elias, granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum, and adjourned the case till March 17 for mention

In the early hours of Tuesday, Boko Haram militants stormed the Federal Government College in Buni Yadi, Gujba LGA of Yobe State, killing 29 students.


The police and military have confirmed the incident.

According to some reports, the militants did not use guns in order not to alert the security guards, but instead have slain the victims before burning the school to the ground.

“Some of the students bodies were burned to ashes,” said police commissioner Sanusi Rufai, adding 24 staff quarters, including the adminisstrative block of the college, were razed by the fire.

The exact number of casualties is yet unclear, but some sources say there are no less than 29 bodies of male victims.

Military spokesman in Yobe State Eli Lazarus disclosed that suspected Boko Haram insurgents attacked a students’ hostel at the Federal Government College in the town of Buni Yadi around 2:00 a.m.

The latest attack is the fourth recorded on schools in Yobe State. GSS Damaturu, GSS Mamudo and College of Agriculture, Gujba were attacked last year.

The police denies number of casualties There was a fatal clash between residents of DadinKowa and Gyel area of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State on Monday. The clash came on the heels of the alleged killing of nine persons in a similar styled mayhem in Gyero village. According to witnesses, the Monday clash resulted to the death of 3 persons. The Plateau state Police Commissioner, Chris Olakpe, confirmed the incident and said it was a sad development. He, however, denied the number of casualties, saying “only one person was killed.” Mr. Olakpe said, “Yes there was tension around the locality this afternoon but our men swing into action and were able to restore back normalcy to the communities. But peace has been restored back to the area.” A witness of the incident, Musa Ibrahim, in a telephone interview, said “some youth who had gone hunting last night were killed by unknown persons in Gyero Village and three of their corpse were later discovered.” This led to a protest. PREMIUM TIMES learnt that it took the efforts of security personnel who shot into the air to disperse the protesters. The clash and the casualties recorded has affected preparations for the local government elections as some ad-hoc staff deployed for the elections were not able to get to Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission, PLASIEC, to collect election materials. All routes leading to the secretariat of the commission were closed. Also, businesses in both communities were affected, as a PREMIUM TIMES correspondent gathered that most shop owners within the affected areas closed their business for fear of hoodlums taking advantage of the situation to loot shops. The situation has led to intensified security checks within Jos as heavy presence of security operatives can be seen on most streets of Jos.
