The Lagos State Police Command has arrested seven suspected cultists who engaged in supremacy battle in Bariga area of the State on Saturday, leading to the killing of a 65-year-old woman.
The deceased, Adejoke Adefuye was burnt beyond recognition when her house located at 19, Oshinfolarin Street in Bariga was set ablaze by the rival cult groups.

Trouble had started when members of Eiye confraternity led by one Ibrahim Balogun clashed with another rival cult group known as Aiye confraternity led by a man simply identified as Gideon in a supremacy fight at the area.
 
The cultists, according to reports, vandalized some vehicles parked along the road in the area, while two members of the Aiye confraternity known as Bobo and Abayomi Olubola lost their lives in the fracas.
 
A statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Dolapo Badmus, confirmed the arrest of the cultists, as well as some of the equipment used to carry out the operation.
Badmus said the second in command of one of the cult groups was among those arrested, while three power bikes, one live/expended cartridges and a tricycle popularly known as Keke Marwa used to get to the scene were also confiscated.
 
She said the cultists have been terrorizing the area for some days and that they were able to make some arrests due to the quick response to the distress calls received concerning the fracas.
Those arrested, according to Badmus include Afees Olaide Fagunwa, Nurudeen Lateef, Richard Ewa, Richard Abayomi, Mohammed Musa, Kayode Dada and Adams Adelakun.
 
She said that the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Gbagada General Hospital for autopsy by the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) while other occupants of the burnt building who sustained minor injuries were treated by the Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS).
She said that further investigation into the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti.

Detectives in Ondo State Police Command have arrested 11 suspected cultists in Owo area of the state, shortly after they were initiated as members of Aye confraternity in the bush along Owo/Ifon Expressroad.

It was gathered that the suspects came from Uzeba in the neighbouring Edo State for the initiation, and were rounded up while returning to their base in Edo.


It was learned that the Anti-Crime Patrol team, led by Owo Area Commander, Eboka Friday, arrested the suspects.

Contacted, police spokesman in the state, Femi Joseph, said the suspects had made confessional statements that they were in Owo town for initiation.

On how they were nabbed, Joseph noted that the body language of the suspects and the blood-stained polythene bags found on them aroused suspicion that led to their arrest and subsequent detention.

Joseph assured that all the suspects would soon be charged to court, after the completion of investigations, adding that the command would make the state hot for criminals.

Scores of persons were reportedly shot dead, Wednesday, in Ula Upata community, Ahoada East local government area by suspected cultists.

The Rivers state Police command on its part said it was aware of the death of eight. The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Muhammad in a text message  said suspected cultists were behind the brutal murder, adding that the timely intervention of Policemen saved the community of more death by the rampaging cultists.

“The incident was more of cult-related heinous activities at Ula Upata community, Ahoada East local government area. Eight persons were killed.

Quick intervention by our men for stalled the situation from escalating. One of the suspected cultists was arrested and an English pump action gun recovered from him. Investigation is right now ongoing”, he said.



An eye witness, Mr Frank Alabi said he was in his room in the village when suddenly he started hearing gunshots, adding that he quickly ran into a nearby bush where he monitored all that happened.

He said the assailants after killing ten in his Ula Upata village moved to to Ahoada West to kill another six persons,

“I saw everything. I was in my room when about five boys started shooting. The killing started about 12.5am. I was in my house when I saw the killers. They were five persons. They carried three AK47 and two pump actin. I called the DPO and the JTF.”

One of those killed was a Police Corporal and nine others in the community before they later moved to Ahoada West to kill another six persons.

Continuing, he said the JTF that responded to his distress call arrested one of the cultists.

Former Deputy Speaker , Federal House of Representatives, Hon Chibudum Nwuche condemned the killing, urging the Inspector General to intervene to save the state from further cult related killings.

About 100 undergraduates of the University of Ibadan and the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife renounced cultism at the separates crusades tagged ‘Campus Holy Ghost Service’, which were held at the two universities.

NE monitored the two events on Dove TV, which is owned by the Redeemed Christian Church of God, observed that the number of students, who turned their back on their evil ways at UI outnumbered those who shunned various cult groups at the OAU.

Speaking on the topic, Divine Visitation, at UI on Wednesday night, the cleric admonished anyone involved in cultism to come out of the congregation to the altar area to surrender their lives to Jesus Christ.

Before Adeboye counted 12, students trooped out to renounce cultism publicly and the cleric prayed to God to destroy every evil covenant and curse they might have attracted while they were members od various cult groups.



The revival held at the OAU had the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Bamitale Omole, in attendance and he watched with joy as his students trooped out and turned their backs on cult groups.
Some youngsters, who apparently are secondary school students, were also seen among those who renounced cultism at the OAU crusade, tagged ‘Mighty Hand of Power.’

Some female students were also part of those who decided to come out of cultism to begin to live responsibly on the campus.

Adeboye said “I want those of you who have been deceived into joining any cult group to come forward and my God will set you free.

“Come now, I want to pray for you, the Lord wants to set you free. Come and be free, come to the one who can set you free. “

The Public Relations of the OAU, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, when contacted, said those who renounced cultism at the crusade could not be said to be students of the OAU because students from various higher institution attended the service.

He said, “Some students came from different higher institutions for the service. Some of them hearkened to the call of God made by Baba Adeboye.

“We are happy that youths of this country are renouncing cultism and embracing God. It shows that there is a bright future for this country. We are happy and I am sure the people of Nigeria are happy about this.”

The Arch- Bishop, Enugu Ecclesiastical Province, Most. Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma, yesterday, took a swipe at the pro-Biafra groups describing the demonstrations as misguided.
The cleric said the protests by the youths were borne out of frustration and idleness caused by infrastructure decay in the South-East geopolitical zone.

Bishop Chukwuma while addressing newsmen said that the agitators did not experience the Nigeria’s civil war to appreciate its toll on the Igbo nation.

He said:
“Our people have invested in other parts of Nigeria. The agitation for Biafra is a grievance being shown in a wrong way because of frustration. The youths are frustrated because many of them have been used and dumped by politicians. Most of these politicians have failed them. The appointment of an Igbo in President Buhari’s cabinet does not translate to infrastructure development.
“All that we need now is the empowerment of our youths. Federal Government should ensure constant  power supply so that industries will be established to create jobs to curb restiveness. An idle man is the devil’s workshop. The Igbo is in support of the President’s anti-corruption fight. The people who have stolen our wealth should be brought to book and the funds recovered plunged in the development of our area,” Chukwuma said.
“We are aggrieved over the state of our roads. There is no federal presence in the South-East. Our prisons are congested among others. Although we did not vote for Buhari, we now know where his administration is going and we have embraced it.Buhari should temper justice with mercy over Biafra agitation and release Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally.” “the Arch Bishop appealed.

For refusing to give him N2m gratification, The Caretaker Committee Chairman, Ariaria International market, Mr. Lucky Akubueze has illegally dissolved the elected executives of the market as well as threatened to use his connection with the governor to descend heavily on them.
 Mr. Akubueze who is a close relative of the governor of Abia state, Chief T.A Orji was also accused of using the Abia State Vigilante Service popularly referred to as Bakassi Boys to harass the elected officials of the market which according to them is unacceptable.
The City Reporters gathered that trouble started when on resumption as the elected executives of the A-D sub union of Ariaria market, Mr. Akubueze demanded a gratification of N2m from the traders with a threat to make things difficult for them should they fail to comply.
In a petition addressed to the Abia state commissioner for Commerce and Industry and signed by the chairman of A-D sub union, Chief Cyril Jubulu, the secretary, Mrs. Eugenia Adikuru and 23 others obtained by The City Reporters, the traders said Mr. Akubueze constantly boast that as a relation to the Abia state governor; he can do anything in the market and go unpunished.
 Part of the petition read, “We wish to inform you that against the wishes of members of the zone and not minding the attendant consequences, Mr. Lucky Akubueze, acting above his powers purportedly dissolved an elected executive of A-D sub union and announced the splitting of the zone into two.
 “As elected executives and members of the zone, we reject in its entirety the purported dissolution of the executives of our zone because Mr. Lucky Akubueze as an appointed chairman has no  powers to dissolve elected officials whose tenure have not ended.
 “Against the lies he told us that he was acting on behalf of the governor, we are aware that government did not send him to demand a gratification of N2m from the zone, the rejection of which is the bedrock of his illegitimate actions.”
 They also lamented how Mr. Akubueze purportedly prepared placards that falsely convey the message that the traders were against the PDP government in Abia State, describing the action as the height of treachery.
 When contacted, Akubueze denied the allegations saying no zone in the market had up to N2m in its account presently and wondered why he should be accused of demanding money the zone does not have.
He however said the zone was divided into two because of its large size but reaffirmed his resolution to deal with the traders as alleged.
 “In fact I would not because of the allegation deny the fact that (Gov) T.A (Orji) is my brother. To be candid, one of these days, I am going to seek audience with him and after tabling this matter before him; I would then come and deal with these recalcitrant former executives of the zone,” he boasted.

In the early hours of Tuesday, Boko Haram militants stormed the Federal Government College in Buni Yadi, Gujba LGA of Yobe State, killing 29 students.


The police and military have confirmed the incident.

According to some reports, the militants did not use guns in order not to alert the security guards, but instead have slain the victims before burning the school to the ground.

“Some of the students bodies were burned to ashes,” said police commissioner Sanusi Rufai, adding 24 staff quarters, including the adminisstrative block of the college, were razed by the fire.

The exact number of casualties is yet unclear, but some sources say there are no less than 29 bodies of male victims.

Military spokesman in Yobe State Eli Lazarus disclosed that suspected Boko Haram insurgents attacked a students’ hostel at the Federal Government College in the town of Buni Yadi around 2:00 a.m.

The latest attack is the fourth recorded on schools in Yobe State. GSS Damaturu, GSS Mamudo and College of Agriculture, Gujba were attacked last year.

A carpenter, Christopher David has been arrested by Delta state Police for allegedly selling his daughter to ritualists.
Christopher was said to have been reported to the police by his wife, Florence after he gave her some part of the N200,000 he was paid for selling his daughter to the ritualists in Lagos..
It was gathered that in October 2013, Christopher’s wife, Florence David had given birth to their baby girl but was taken away from her after her husband deceived her that they could not take care of the child due to their poor living condition.
The husband however handed the baby over to a woman identified as Grace (surname withheld).
DSP Celestina Kalu, Police spokesperson in the state, confirmed that the suspect has been arrested and would be charged to court after investigations have been completed

Contrary to the widespread rumours that the late Prophet, Ireti Ajanaku had been buried secretly by occultic priests in December 2013 and some parts of his body used as tradition demands, checks revealed that the body is still intact at the mortuary of Military Hospital, Yaba, Lagos.
A close aide of the family simply known as Bunmi in a recent interview said that the remains of the controversial clergy are still intact at the morgue.
He said, "It came as a shock to us too when we heard that he had been buried secretly by occultic priests. They claimed that’s the reason we were quiet about his burial plans. The reports were total falsehood. You can find out yourself. The body is still in the mortuary pending when we conclude plans about his burial. Thus, I can tell you authoritatively that he has not been buried. The church has been footing the bills through his wife."
He also revealed that though the members still hold on to the belief that he was not dead, the effect of his demise has been having adverse effect on the church members financially.
“Things are not that rosy with the church members and their leaders despite the fact that they still hold to the belief that he is still alive. They now resort to begging and holding to ransom all the clients that used to patronize the prophet for financial support to run the ministry. Although the wife is comfortable, things are hard for the church”.
WHERE WILL HE BE BURIED?
Despite the disagreement between the family members and the disciples of late Prophet Ireti Ajanaku over his burial plans and date, ENCOMIUM Weekly gathered that he would be buried in Lagos. Although, the family preferred either his Lagos home or hometown, Gbogan, Osun State, they decided to respect the deceased’s wish to be buried at his church in Lagos.

Once again, members of the Boko Haram sect attacked Izge village on Sunday, shooting sporadically and burning houses in villages.
Residents of Izge told the Hausa Service of the BBC that members of the sect stormed the village, killing several people and burning many houses with impunity in an attack that lasted three hours and 22 minutes.
TELL learnt that at the moment, many residents of Izge had fled the troubled zone to the neighbouring Adamawa State.
The insurgents attacked the same village last week, killing over 100  people. On a previous attack, Boko Haram members attacked the village and went away with food items belonging to the villagers.
The sect members also attacked Malari village, about 15km away from Maiduguri, the state capital.
In the meantime, Babangida Aliyu, chairman of the Northern States Governors' Forum, NSGF, has called on the Federal government to provide states currently faced with insurgencies adequate funds to help fight the menace.
A statement released yesterday in Minna, Niger State and signed by Danladi Ndayebo, Chief Press Secretary to Aliyu stated that, “The Forum also reiterated its appeal to the federal government to provide adequate funds to Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states afflicted with the problem of insurgency in order to address attendant issues.”
The Northern governors were further disturbed by the fact that another 29 persons were killed in Barkin  Ladi local government area of Plateau State on Saturday and called on the federal government to review its counter insurgency strategy in order to protect innocent citizens who are being killed by members of the Boko Haram sect.Adejuwon Soyinka

At least 35 persons have been killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen in a fresh attack on the people of Gwer West local government area of Benue State. 80,000 people have been displaced following the attack.

The marauders who sacked six council wards in the attack also killed a 70-year-old woman, one Tyobam at Terhule Antarctic village where she had gone to visit her daughter.

The latest attack which lasted two days came on the heels of a similar attack early in the week, where three villages, including the ancestral home of the paramount ruler of the Tiv nation, Tse-Torkula was sacked by the invaders in Guma local government area of the state.

“Our communities have been taken over and we are helpless; the last two days have witnessed unwarranted killings and destruction of property. I can tell you without mincing words that over 35 persons may have been killed in this renewed attack,” an anonymous source told Vanguard.

“Houses, huts farmland and economic trees have all been destroyed , people are fleeing their abode, and the most painful part of it all is that the popular Makurdi-Naka road is no more safe for commuters and motorists alike because innocent road users are daily shot on that road,” the source said.

The Gwer West local government council secretary, Mr. Mark Dewua who spoke to journalists yesterday in Makurdi, the state capital, on the renewed clashes lamented that Naka, the council headquaters was gradually being deserted.

State Governor Gabriel Suswam had earlier in the week raised the alarm over the persistent attack on Benue villages, calling on security agencies to safeguard people’s lives.

Two  persons were on thursday  reportedly killed – with several others seriously injured as motor park touts suspected to be the notorious war group known as  Ndi Ukwu Aziza and Ndi Ukwuotosi clashed at Aba central motor park, Upper Iweka in the commercial city of Onitsha.
It was  gathered that the bloody clash ensued when the two groups engaged each other in a fierce battle of wit – wielding different dangerous weapons including firearms over who controls the park.
During the ensuing battle, no fewer than 27 persons including travelers and drivers allegedly sustained various degrees of injuries when the two warring factions engaged each other in a deadly battle over who takes over the Aba central park.
Though the Police authority swiftly denied any casualty during the clash, our reporter who visited the scene shortly after the clash said over 27 persons mainly women and children who were suspected to be travelers and hawkers at the park sustained matchet cut wounds and other degrees of injuries from the rampaging urchins.
According to one of the victims who introduced himself as a loader at the park, Chinedu Anyigor from Ebonyi state disclosed that the incident occurred when a group of touts known as Ndi Ukwu Aziza allegedly recruited from Ogbaru Youths by the manager of the Aba Park, one Ifeanyi Okafor were relieved of the job following alleged illegal and criminal activities.
Anyigor narrates that Mr. Ifeanyi Okafor who was given the park by the state government to manage sought for the help of Ogbaru youths, who came into the park and described themselves as Ndi Ukwu Aziza.
He said, the group were in charge of collecting revenue from the park but when their activities became unbearable, they were asked to leave the park and another group, Ndi Ukwu Otosi entered in to take over the job, after much, the first group who were sacked stormed the park yesterday and started unleashing trouble on the people and in the process, they shot about two person dead.
Anyigor also disclosed that during the clash between Ndi Ukwu Aziza and Ndi Ukwu Otosi, property worth several millions of naira were lost, while calling on the security agencies and Anambra state government to intervene in the matter to restore law and order in the parks.
The Area Commander in Onitsha, Mr. Benjamin Wordu confirmed the incident and disclosed that the command immediately deployed team of policemen to restore peace and order in the commercial city of Onitsha and its environs and confirmed the arrest of some of the suspects.

The killing of innocent civilians in the hinterlands of Plateau State has continued unabated as 13 people were reportedly killed and 5 others injured in another early morning attack on Thursday by unknown gunmen.
Reporter gathered that the attackers stormed Rapyem Village in Fan District of Barkin Ladi Local Government of the State at about 1am shooting sporadically, which led to the death of 13 people and 5 others injured, mostly women and children.
Confirming the incident to reporter, the Interim Administrator of Barkin Ladi Local Government, Mr. Habila Dung, said the attack took place in the wee hours of Thursday.
He described the attack as “sad and barbaric”, adding that 13 persons were killed, among them were nine children, two women, two men and 5 were injured and currently receiving treatment in hospital.
When contacted, the Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Felicia Anselem, confirmed that there was an attack at Rapyem Village in Fan District of Barkin Ladi Local Government. She said the Police are working on the casualty figure, but maintained that normalcy has since returned to the community.
The Police Spokesperson called on the citizenry in Barkin Ladi local government and the State as a whole to go about their normal business as security agencies are on top of the situation.

The people of Izge town in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State are still burying  their dead following the Saturday night attack by Boko Haram insurgents.

The fatality figure which stood at 93 on Sunday has risen to 133  as remains of 40 more  victims who died in the surrounding bushes were for brought to the town for burial Monday morning.

There are fears that more corpses may be still be brought as the search for the missing residents of the town continues.

Lending credence  to the fear that the fatality figure may still go up is the fact that a lot more of those injured in the attack are on danger list in various hospitals in the area where they are receiving treatment.

Meanwhile, the town  with  a population of  just above 10,000 persons has been  deserted as the residents continued to flee  for fear that the insurgents may launch a fresh attack.

Governor Kashim Shettima, who has been out of the state since weekend,  is expected to pay a condolence visit to the town on  Tuesday.

A protocol officer attached to the governor,while confirming this said:  "The governor is already on the way back to town and will be visiting the place on Tuesday.

 The incident happened Saturday at Okpara Square, Umuahia, Abia state, the venue of the rally which was designed to officially declare Governor T.A Orji’s Senatorial ambition ahead of the 2015 general election.
 The deceased who was identified as Mr. John Ndubuka, a planning officer with the Abia State Government House Umuahia as well as a Personal Assistant to Mr. Chinedu Orji was allegedly shot on the chest by a policeman attached to Chinedu on his order over a minor disagreement.
According to eyewitness account, Chinedu, the self acclaimed Governor of the state, was said to be angered by the utterance of his late PA over a minor issue, and in a display of his usual unruly and criminal behaviour he ordered his police orderly to shoot the late aide.
The witness who described Chinedu as a junkie told our correspondent that this is part of humiliation Abians received daily from the governor and his family.
According to him, the incident would have been avoided if not that all civil servants were ordered to attend the rally or get sacked.
“The Director of Administration Government House, Mr. Francis Ihedioha mandated every civil servant in Government House to participate in the political rally or be shown the way out of Government House. We the civil servants actually came out to save our jobs not necessarily because we are in support of Ochendu.
 “No sane Abia man would ever support the governor’s senatorial ambition. All these groups that called themselves Umuahia north, Umuahia south and Ikwuano youths are impostors; crowd of sycophants and paid hirelings who see this as easy way of making money. What do you expect? Of course they must survive.” He said.
 Another civil servant who spoke under anonymity wondered what the governor has achieved to deserve commendation saying that T.A was Chief of Staff for eight years, Governor for eight years and instead of development, Abians deteriorated below beggars.
 “Do we have dearth of quality representatives in Umuahia Senatorial District? If T.A Orji felt he has done well to deserve our votes, why is he organizing a rally to lobby us and why is he forcing people to attend?  Our colleague would probably be alive today if not for the forceful directive given to all civil servants to come out and support the governor or get sacked. Ordinarily nobody will come out for this show of shame. He is the one who sponsored these so called groups with fictitious names.” He said.
 The City Reporters gathered that all efforts to save the victim did not yield any result as he was confirmed dead on arrival at the Federal Medical Centre FMC, Umuahia by eight-man medical team of professional doctors who were on ground to attend to him.
 However, we can authoritatively report that the beleaguered Governor, T.A Orji has been making frantic efforts to cover the incident which was reported by the state owned media as a mere accidental discharge which is being investigated.
 Majority of the people who spoke to us decried the humiliation Abians have been subjected to, by the actions of the Governor’s son, since his father took over the mantle of leadership. They however called on the Inspector General of Police to investigate the unlawful and unprofessional behaviour of the Governor’s son and his orderly respectively.

Expectedly, cult related war activities across Delta State have horrendously threatened the relative peace existing in the state, especially with the new dimension of teenagers who have taken to various cult groups with the aim of stealing, raping and unleashing mayhem on unsuspecting members of the public.
Police, yesterday, arrested no fewer than 2000 teenage cultists in Asaba and its environs.
But the police commissioner in the state, Mr Ikechukwu Aduba, said that these cult groups would perform their wicked roles as training grounds for armed robbers, and kidnappers will not have blissful atmosphere of operation as the police are poised to rid off all forms of criminality in the state.
According to the police boss, “following the criminal activities of cultists in recent times, the police have declared war on them, thus leading to the arrest of many in different parts of the state, especially in Asaba where they lay siege with teenagers recruited to rape and steal from unsuspecting members of the public.”
Noting that the cult members whose ages range from 15 to 17 years, the police boss disclosed that the police detectives acted on a tip off and stormed their hideout behind the popular Lion House in Asaba where they uncovered litany of weapons including where the cultists operate their shrine across the River Niger as well as where they forcibly initiated young boys and girls, especially the girls after allegedly raping them.
LEADERSHIP Weekend reliably gathered that nemesis caught up with the suspects when the police detectives, on a tip off, stormed their hideout after the group members had abducted two sisters and five others on their way home from school, including taking them to their shrine for initiation and arrested three of them who later led the detectives upon interrogation to the whereabouts of others.
Narrating the ordeals of her daughters in the hands of the teenage cultists, one Madam Lizzy Evuarherhe told LEADERSHIP Weekend that one of her daughters was almost drowned at River Niger when the cultists took them to their shrine for initiation, adding that they were put in canoe after forcing them to enter but were rescued by the police who heard them shouting.
