Most common AI uses cases today: security, analytics, business intelligence and chatbots!
By Bob O'Donnell,
The big picture: Given the torrid pace of developments in the world of artificial intelligence, or AI, it’s probably not surprising to hear that applications of the technology in the business world are evolving quickly as well. What may catch people off guard, however, is that much of the early work in real-world use is happening in more mundane, back-office style applications like data security and network security, instead of the flashier options like voice UI, as many might expect.

As part of the AI in the Enterprise study recently fielded by TECHnalysis Research (see a previous column called “Survey: Real World AI Deployments Still Limited” for more background and additional information on the survey), over 500 US-based businesses that were actively involved in either developing, piloting, or running AI applications in full production, were asked about the kinds of applications they use in their organizations. Respondents were asked to pick from a list of 15 application types, ranging from image recognition, to spam filtering, to IoT analytics, and more, as well as the maturity level of each of their application efforts, from development to pilot to full production.

As Figure 1 shows below, the top two choices amongst the respondent group were Data Security and Network Security, with roughly 70% of all respondents saying they had some kind of effort in these areas.

Fig. 1

While these are clearly critical tasks for most every organization, it’s interesting to see them at the top of the list, because they’re not the type of applications that are typically seen—or discussed—as being cutting edge AI applications. What the survey data clearly shows, however, is that these core company infrastructure applications are the ones that are first benefitting from AI. Though they may not be as sexy as computer vision and image recognition, ensuring that an organization’s data and its networks are secure from attacks are great ways to leverage the practical intelligence that machine learning and AI can bring to organizations.

As important as the top-level rankings of these applications may be, when you look at the application usage data by maturity level of the implementation, even more dramatic trends appear. Figure 2 lists the top AI applications in full production and, as you can see, virtually all of the highest-ranking applications can be classified more as back-office or infrastructure type programs.

Fig. 2

Spam Filtering applications made it to number two on this list and Device Security rose to number four overall. Again, both of these applications can leverage AI-based learning to provide a strong benefit to organizations that deploy them, but neither of them have the association with human intelligence-type capabilities that so many people expect (and fear) from AI.

When you look at the top applications in pilots, a dramatically different group rises to the top, as you can see in Figure 3. Here’s where we start to see more of the AI applications that I think many people might have thought would have appeared higher on the overall list, such as Business Intelligence, Voice UI/Natural Language Processing, as well as Image Recognition. What the data shows, however, is that many of these more “sci-fi” like applications are simply in much earlier stages of development.

Fig. 3

Following the same kind of trends, the top AI applications still in development, illustrated in Figure 4 below, are focused on an even more distant view of the future, with Robotics at the top of the list followed by Manufacturing Efficiency/Predictive Maintenance and then Call Center/Chatbots. Companies are clearly driving efforts to get these kinds of applications going in their organizations, but the real-world implementations are still a bit further down the road.

Fig. 4

Taking a step back from all the data, it’s interesting to note that there are unique groups of applications at the various maturity levels. Many of those that are high-ranking at one level are much lower-ranked at the next maturity level, suggesting very distinct phases of development across different types of AI applications. It’s particularly interesting to see that the realities of AI usage in the enterprise are fairly different than what much of the AI press coverage has suggested.

By understanding what companies are actually doing in this exciting area, it can help set more realistic expectations for how (and when) various aspects of AI will start to make their impact in the business world.

Look for more data from this study and a link to summary results in future columns.

In terms of changes, since there aren’t any release notes available, I can only assume that the present package will slightly improve stability and audio quality once more. However, it’s up to you to install and find out what the changes really are.

Therefore, make sure your computer is running one of the aforementioned OSes, save and unzip the downloadable archive, and locate and run the available setup executable with administrative rights.
Afterwards, wait for all the required files to be extracted, follow all instructions displayed on-screen, and allow the installer to apply the new update. When the installation has finished, it would be a good idea to perform a system reboot to make sure that all changes take effect properly.
Last but not least, we don’t recommend trying to apply this 7791 build on platforms other that the highlighted ones, even though they might seem to work at first. Doing so, as well as interrupting the process in any way, can lead various to malfunctions.
That said, download Realtek HD Audio Driver 6.0.1.7791, take into account all the aforementioned aspects, and constantly check our website in order to stay up to date with the latest releases.

This is Scarlett Johansson's honest and brutal dating advice
Scarlett knows what’s up (Picture: Samir Hussein/Getty Images)
Sometimes the simplest dating advice is the most helpful so get ready to remember Scarlett Johannsson’s words about what to do when you have an absolute idiot messing around with your heart.
Speaking to Cosmopolitan magazine, the award-winning actress admitted that she had once been in the position of dating someone who was ‘forever unavailable… but, like, so attractively unavailable’ – and we all know how that feels.
This is Scarlett Johansson's honest and brutal dating advice
But it’s when you’re leaving your friends to text that not-so-special someone outside a bar in the early hours of the morning, that Scarlett says you have to realise you’ve hit rock bottom and ‘that is the moment you’ve gotta cut it off’.
Long, long ago, I had someone in my life who was forever unavailable…but, like, so attractively unavailable.
You have to get to your breaking point. Rock bottom is the moment when you’re like, “I’ve lost myself. Why am I standing outside this bar at 1:30 in the morning texting while my friends are inside? Or taking a taxi to see him at some ungodly hour? This isn’t me”.
That is the moment you’ve gotta cut it off. Otherwise, it will keep coming back, suck your blood.
This is Scarlett Johansson's honest and brutal dating advice
But her words do have us wondering now who her ‘attractively unavailable’ someone is.
Scarlett has dated some of the biggest celebrities in entertainment including Ryan Reynolds, Jack Antonoff, and Sean Penn.
She is now married to Romain Dauriac and the pair welcomed a daughter, Rose Dorothy, in 2014.

Man who was abandoned at Gatwick Airport pleas for parents 30 years later
Steven Hyde was abandoned in the ladies’ toilets of Gatwick Airport on April 10 1986 (Picture: Steven Hydes / Facebook)
A man who was abandoned as a baby at Gatwick Airport has made an appeal for his parents thirty years on.
Steven Hydes, nicknamed Gary Gatwick, was left in the ladies’ toilets dressed in two babygrows and wrapped in a blanket.

He was discovered by an airport employee on April 10 1986 and is believed to have been 10 days old.
Now, Mr Hydes is making a fresh appeal for his biological parents to come forward despite having no clue who his parents might be.

He told Sky News: ‘It’s the not knowing… why it happened and things like that I really want to know. To me it’s just a blank space that everyone else seems to have.
‘There’s also things like your medical history that others take for granted and I don’t have that. I’d just like to know what happened, it will explain more about myself, complete me in a way.’

Mr Hydes took a DNA test several years ago to find out where his parents may have originated from and found out they could be from England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany or France.
The 30-year-old is being helped by the Missing Family organisation, who say two DNA matches for Steve have been found.
He hopes this appeal might finally bring the closure he’s been looking for.

For those who just shrug at the thought of NHS privatisation - this a bill for just six nights in a US hospital

Think privatisation of the NHS isn’t a big deal?
Well, we’ve just seen a glimpse of our potential future, courtesy of political cartoonist Gary Barker – and it is terrifying.
The photo shows a receipt for a six-night hospital stay in the US, which famously has one of the least cost-efficient healthcare systems in the world.
On top of that, the country’s general health is among the worst of the world’s developed countries. People in the UK can currently expect to live around two years longer than our cousins across the pond.
According to this receipt, the bill comes to $55,496.11 – that’s £38,522.92. Yikes.
Broken down, the hospital charged:
  • $15,336.84 (£10646.15) for the room and bed changes
  • $2,175.01 (£1509.79) for medicines
  • $3,178.06 (£2206.07) for medical and surgical supplies
  • $10,038.13 (£6968.02) for clinical laboratory work
  • $7,410.24 (£5143.86) for diagnostic x-rays
  • $3,008.74 (£2088.53) for CT scans
  • $9,408.23 (£6530.77) for using the operating room
  • $488.33 (£338.98) for imaging services
  • $2,608 (£1810.36) for using the emergency room
  • $1,503.62 (£1043.75) for using the recovery room
  • $340.36 (£236.26) for cardiac monitoring
Not that this should come as a surprise to anyone, really. Remember that British couple who were hit with a £140,000 hospital bill after their baby was born prematurely in New York?
And while US citizens can pay for many (but not all) things with good health insurance, this is a privilege a lot of people cannot afford.

A brief timeline of NHS privatisation

2012 to 2014: Private companies with links to the Tories were awarded £1.5billion worth of NHS contracts, according to Unite.
March 2015: the NHS agreed to its largest-ever privatisation deal in order to deal with its growing backlog of patients.
September 2015: Capita, a private firm, took over NHS England’s primary care support services.
This receipt shows what NHS privatisation would look like
Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt (Picture: PA)
November 2015: Richard Branson’s Virgin Care awarded £64million contract to take over the NHS’s community child health services.
January 2016: Virgin Care was awarded a £126million contract to take over services at two hospitals in Kent. Virgin Care now has around 330 NHS contracts.
2015 to present: A row continues to rage between Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt and junior doctors, with Hunt pledging to impose a new contract on medics.
Many junior doctors, as well as the anti-privatisation NHA Party, have accused Hunt of introducing impossible working conditions in order to create instability.
This, they claim, would cause a vacuum in the NHS – allowing even more private firms to move in.

‘If the NHS is unable to provide services, a gap will be created for the expansion of the insurance-based private sector, which has always had a relatively small role in the UK,’ an NHA Party spokesperson said.
‘Is this government prepared to sacrifice the health concerns of millions simply to further the profit-making opportunities for the private health sector? That’s the price we will pay if the junior doctors lose.

Reverend Run slut-shamed Amber Rose and she was having none of it
(Picture: OWN)
Amber Rose had to lay down some real talk to Run DMC’s Reverend Run and actor Tyrese Gibson this week.
She was a guest on their OWN TV show, It’s Not You, It’s Men, when they implied that she was getting sexually assaulted because of the way that she dresses.
‘I get sexually assaulted constantly,’ Amber said. ‘When I walk down the street, because people think I’m famous or I’m cool and I’m taking pictures, that they can just grab my ass or put their hand under my skirt or, ”Oh Amber, can I come grab your boobs?’
Rev Run said: ‘They are asking you to do that because of representation of what you are wearing and stuff and what it seems like in their mind what you’re representing. And Gibson continued: ‘I’m just saying, the comfort-ability that some people find in wanting to touch or grope you… it’s an energy that is sent out there that creates that type of response.’
Rev and Tyrese probably didn’t realise how slut-shaming their statements came across, but Amber soon put them straight.
‘No it doesn’t, and I’m gonna tell you why. If I’m laying down with a man butt-naked and his condom is on, and I say, ”You know what? No. I don’t wanna do this. I changed my mind,’ she explained. ‘That means no. That means f**k no. It doesn’t matter how far I take it or what I have on, when I say no, it means no.’
But then Rev dropped this one: ‘I wasn’t saying… I’ve just heard a quote that was like, “Dress how you wanna be addressed…”‘
community-booooo
Amber then made it perfectly clear how ignorant that statement was: ‘Oh, boo. No. That’s not realistic. Stop it.’
She continued: ‘If I want to wear a short skirt and a tank top and I’m at the club with my friends and I feel sexy, I’m not DTF [down to f**k] I’m not even looking at you. I don’t even want to have sex with you. I didn’t come here to have sex. I didn’t come here to hook up with nobody, I came here with my girls and I just feel pretty. I’m not asking for nothing.’
Amber clearly managed to make Rev and Tyrese see the error of their misogynistic ways, and soon tweeted their support for her.

In her new Vlog yesterday February 17th, the media personality, addressed man snatching and why its bad for women to date men who already have girlfriends. According to her, some women believe that a guy that has a serious girlfriend is still available as far as he is not married to the supposed girlfriend. Toke thinks this ideology is wrong. She said;

"If you know a guy has a babe, respect the relationship because you would want someone to respect yours as well. You don't have to be best friends. If you know of someone and you know the person is in a relationship, respect her relationship. I don't believe in giving your number to a guy that is seeing somebody else a chance.I am sorry the moment you tell me you have a girlfriend, nothing can make me look at you twice. In my mind I am think"if you have a girlfriend what are you doing here? Some people are like so ''do you want us to remain single?" I feel like this is what adds to the drama females have in their lives because it's not as straightforward as it should be. The more you hear people give advice like "Ah there are no men out there oh! If he is toasting you you better just say Yes! So what if he has a girlfriend, after all, its not as if he is not married to her. They have something and what they have, is leading somewhere before you the homewrecker, boyfriend snatcher ,the man thief decided to shine your eye"she said

Apparently worried by the continuous decline in the nation’s economy, Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, on Thursday, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to convene an emergency economic conference to enable experts brainstorm on the way forward and future of the economy.

The Nobel Laureate made the call when he paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Information and Culture, Alh. Lai Mohammed in Abuja. Soyinka said the conference became necessary to enable experts diagnose the problems currently facing the country and to make necessary recommendation for government to get the economy out of the woods.

‘‘I agree with those who say the economy is bad. It is obvious and it is so bad. We really need an emergency economic conference, bringing experts together to match the nation forward. I think the economy is not encouraging. Quite frankly, I think most economists will agree with this.

‘‘The economic condition of a nation does not deteriorate over night, something came before that deterioration. A certain prolonged process of attrition that happened in the past is now knocking on the door. The consequences of the past misgovernance is what we are undergoing right now.’’

Justin Sullivan/Getty ImagesGoogle CEO Sundar Pichai.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai just weighed in on Apple's battle with the FBI, which has ordered Apple to help it unlock the phone of one of the shooters who killed 14 people in San Bernardino, California, last year in an apparent terrorist act.
In a series of tweets, Pichai wrote that although Google gives "law enforcement access to data based on valid legal orders," that is "wholly different than requiring companies to enable hacking of customer devices and data," which could set a "troubling precedent."
Apple is fighting the court order mandating that it help the FBI unlock an iPhone that belonged to one of the shooters by creating software that would allow the intelligence agency to have an unlimited number of attempts to enter the phone's passcode before it auto-wipes.
"chilling" demand that "would undermine the very freedoms and liberty our government is meant to protect." He's arguing that to help the FBI unlock the phone would basically be providing a dangerous "master key" and that the agency is essentially "asking Apple to hack our own users."
So Pichai's stance is, basically, we support Apple — we will give law enforcement data when we need to, but we will not put in a "backdoor" for the government.

marco rubioREUTERS/Aaron P. BernsteinSen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida).
CNN anchor Anderson Cooper may have surprised some viewers by revealing Senator Marco Rubio is a fan of electronic dance music at Wednesday's Republican town hall event in Greenville, South Carolina.
But it seemed like he surprised Rubio by asking the Florida senator if he's ever been to a rave.
"The other thing I found surprising about you is that you like EDM, electronic dance music," Anderson said. "Have you ever been to a rave?"
"No, no, I’ve never been to a rave," Rubio said immediately, before turning to the audience with a look of surprise on his face as audience members began to laugh. "No, I've never been to a rave. It's a Republican primary, Anderson!"
"No, I listen to it. I think I’m a little too old to be going to a rave, to be honest with you."
Rubio proceeded to describe his attraction to EDM.
"I actually grew up listening to '90s hip-hop music, especially the West Coast stuff, and I really liked it," he said. "But in the last few years whats happened with EDM, you've got these electronic disc jockeys, or these DJs that are taking electronic music and overlaying it with tracks from country music and all sorts of things.
"So the lyrics are clean, the beats and music are fun. I've gotten into it. It’s a lot of fun."
This isn't the first time Rubio has discussed EDM this primary. In an interview with CNN in November, Rubio revealed he's a fan of Dutch DJ Tiësto.
Rubio also used a song by house musicians Axwell and Ingrosso during his presidential campaign kickoff rally in April, a move that landed Rubio in hot water with the Swedish duo.
"Axwell [and] Ingrosso didn't give their permission for this song to be used and don't want to be affiliated with a particular party during the upcoming presidential race," the duo said in a statement following the rally.

Parents asked not to smoke joints on the school run

Parents dropping their children off at school have been asked by teachers not to smoke joints.
Yes, that’s right – parents have been caught smoking spliffs while taking their kids to school. A primary school.
Now, deputy head teacher Deborah Binns has asked them to ‘set a good example’ for their children at St John’s Primary, Radcliffe, Greater Manchester.

The spread of the existence and acceptance of reported “hurt feeling offenses” across college campuses is something that is a disturbing trend. Colleges are institutes of learning, and what they teach students with these programs is entitlement and to be thin skinned and thick-headed. When students are taught to scream for privileges based upon their contrived minority components, they later become adults with the same insistence. They are being taught to be demanding pains in the neck, social malcontents, and agitators, in other words, lifelong Democrats.
The hurt feelings police at the University of Portland in Portland, Oregon have a new tool and a lower bar for infractions which will enable them to issue “I Feel Sad” citations to students who dare to inflict reality upon the university’s whiny cocoon larvae. While they may not yet be butterflies, it is important to the school that they have every means available to act like they are. What kind of butterflies, you might wonder? Moths who see themselves as Monarchs.
The University has launched a new web page for whiners called “Speak Up.” Students are encouraged to report any of the things that they would just have to deal with in the real world. While it’s called “Speak Up,” what it really should say is “Shut up or get a citation.”
The website states, “We ask members of our community to SPEAK UP and report alleged incidents of discrimination and incidents of discomfort regarding observed or experienced interactions of intolerance.” Does intolerance include reporting somebody to the hurt feelings police for being intolerant? Intolerance of intolerance would seem to be implicit in every report. Is there a point of ridiculousness that invalidates claims of intolerance?
Rachel Barry-Arquit, the UP director of marketing and communication, stated, “The University of Portland takes seriously its responsibility to provide an inclusive environment for all members of our community.”
The campus newspaper, the Beacon, reports it was the recognition that “students of color feel isolated on campus” through the widespread presence of “microaggressions” on campus that promoted the need for the new program. There’s nothing like forcing people to be interviewed by cops over some ridiculous preference seeking to make them want to invite the liberal crybabies into their circle. How did we ever survive as a species before all of these egghead control freak liberals saved us from ourselves? Were microagressions really macroagressions before the liberal cavalry rode in side-saddle?
In order to keep the options open for as many reports of the most inane nature to be made, the creators of the site use the term “incidents of discomfort” which they say “were intentionally broad as each person within the community would likely describe a different situation or experience that would define that description.”
Is being white sufficient to warrant a discomfort ticket if some offended fairy is uncomfortable being around them? Will white people report being intimidated by Black Lives Matters types standing and chanting their hate speech? Will white folks even bother to report what is too stupid for anyone other than an agenda driven agitator to report? Will false corroborating stories like the poop swastika be used to in an effort to garner some accommodation? Sure they will, and then they’ll build on it. That’s the whole point.
Promoters of the site said, “[W]e strive to promote a safe environment where all people can live, work, and learn. We ask all of our students, faculty, and staff for a willingness to enter into conversations that celebrate the backgrounds of all people and foster an inclusive community.”
Celebrate the background of white people; really, they’re going to do that? Of course not, they only celebrate non-whites, unless they happen to be Muslim or an Hispanic White person. For the white people who built this nation, what’s there to celebrate?
Those who don’t celebrate deserve to have the feelings police called on them. They’re just mean, hateful, and intolerant. And they haven’t been given permission to talk.

Manny Pacquiao calls gay couples 'worse than animals'

Ten-time world boxing champion and Filipino congressman Manny Pacquiao is under fire after calling gay couples ‘worse than animals’.
Pacquiao, who was long rated as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world and enjoys enormous popularity for his humble demeanour and all-action fighting style, spoke to local broadcaster TV5 in the run up to the Philippines’ May elections, in which he is running for a senate seat.
Pacquiao, a devout Catholic who is running as a conservative Bible-bearing politician, was slammed as an ‘ignorant, bigoted hypocrite’ and a ‘blind prophet’ after he told TV5 that gay couples are ‘worse than animals.’
‘It’s common sense,’ he said.

‘Do you see animals mating with the same sex? Animals are better because they can distinguish male from female.
(We would just quickly add here that homosexual behaviour has been seen in more than 1,500 species of animal.)
‘If men mate with men and women mate with women they are worse than animals.’
Gay Filipino comedian Vice Ganda wrote on Twitter that ‘the Senate needs experts on politics and law, not blind prophets’, and began the hashtag #PrayForMannyPacquiao. Lesbian singer Aiza Seguerra said that though Pacquiao, the Philippines’ most famous export, has ‘done our country proud… you showed why we shouldn’t vote for you.’
Gay marriage is outlawed in the Philippines due to opposition from the Catholic Church and 80 per cent of the country’s 100million people are Catholic. Recent surveys suggest Pacquiao will win in his senate bid.

'We will never give up': Madeleine McCann is ‘still in Portugal’, Mum Kate believes
(Picture: AFP/Getty Images)
Kate McCann says that she believes her daughter has never left Portugal – and that she and Gerry have ‘never given up’.
Kate McCann, 47, says that she believes that whoever snatched the three-year-old in the Algarve resort of Praia de Luz didn’t take her far away.
Kate told The Sun, ‘That’s where she last was and I don’t think she’s been taken a million miles from there.
‘I’ve always said Praia da Luz is the place where I feel closest to her.’
In the nine years since Madeleine vanished, there have been thousands of reported sightings all over the world.

‘The urge to look for Madeleine absolutely hasn’t changed at all. You hear all the time about people who have been missing for years being found. There have been so many cases like that.
‘We will never give up. You couldn’t settle if you thought about giving up. I want an end, an answer. Whatever that it is.’
Kate is behind a new drive to get parents in the UK to register for Child Rescue Alerts – where appeals are sent out electronically when a child goes missing.

Fake football pitches gave my son cancer, claims former NHS boss
Nigel Maguire wants more research on artificial turf to be carried out (Picture: Cascade)
A former head of the National Health Service has said artificial football pitches are to blame for his teenage son’s cancer.
Nigel Maguire, who took early retirement from his job as chief executive of NHS Cumbria to help to look after his son Lewis, believes that the 18-year-old developed Hodgkin’s Lymphoma following years of playing on synthetic football surfaces.
Mr Maguire is now calling for a ban on artificial turf which he says contains chemicals such as mercury, lead, benzene and arsenic. The 52-year-old said that goalkeepers like Lewis ‘dive dozens of times in training so they breathe it in or swallow it and it gets in their grazes.’
‘He used to come home with his kit covered in the stuff,’ he told MailOnline.

This multibillion-dollar industry is conducting an industrial-scale experiment
Maguire believes his son was swallowing harmful chemicals every week. ‘This multibillion-dollar industry is conducting an industrial-scale experiment on our kids’ (Picture: Cascade)
‘We’d have to scrape it off.
‘The more I look into it, the more horrified I am. Anyone who thinks swallowing half a teaspoon a week of that stuff is a good idea is barking mad.’
Maguire wants a suspension on the construction of new 3G – synthetic – pitches and claims an ‘industrial-scale experiment’ is being carried out children playing sport.
‘It is obscene so little research has been done,’ he added.
The news follows concerns raised by campaigned in the US, where synthetic pitch use has been linked to more than 150 cases of cancer.

Anti-gay monk will be able to continue spreading hate
Damon Jonah Kelly was banned from distributing homophobic material but has now had his ban overturned (Picture: )
An anti-gay ‘monk’ who flooded homes with homophobic leaflets has had his ban on handing out offensive material overturned by a judge.
Damon Jonah Kelly, 54, distributed more than 40,000 hate pamphlets through peoples’ letterboxes to homes in 11 countries.
The literature referred to homosexuality and gay marriage as ‘sinful’, ‘immoral’ and ‘the work of the Devil’.

He repeatedly targeted a married lesbian couple who he called ‘the witches’ and when they confronted him about his views he told them: “We used to burn people like you. I’m doing God’s work’.
In October last year, Kelly was forbidden from distributing the unsolicited material about religious, sexual or reproductive topics to any residential, commercial or academic address in England and Wales.
He was also ordered to carry out 170 hours of unpaid community work after pleading guilty to harassment.
After being sentenced, Kelly, who is a former member of the extreme Scottish-based Catholic group the Black Hermits, told the court: ‘You will not stop the word of God’.
Kelly was banned from calling at any residential premises in England and Wales, whether by doorbell, telephone, knocking or any other means, without notifying the occupier of the purpose of distributing unsolicited material.
Damon Jonah Kelly outside Leicester Magistrates Court where he appeared after distributing homophobic material. A 'monk' who delivered homophobic leaflets to homes in Leicestershire has had a ban that curbed his activities overturned. See NTI story NTIMONK. Damon Jonah Kelly (54), had earlier pleaded guilty to harassment after a married lesbian couple objected to him putting a leaflet through the letterbox of their Clarendon Park home in October, 2014. He became aggressive and abusive when the women challenged him about the leaflet's content, saying: "We used to burn people like you. I'm doing God's work." Although the wording of Kelly's leaflet was not illegal in itself, he committed the offence of harassment when he returned to the couple's home a few days later and posted an offensive letter, with distressing content, specifically addressed to "the witches".

But he appealed against the decision and on February 11 at Leicester Crown Court Judge Nicholas Dean QC ruled the magistrates’ order was ‘not appropriate’ and said it was ‘almost a hammer to crack a nut’.
The judge added: ‘No-one in this country has a right to be protected from offensive material or from material that causes anger.
‘This defendant, as any individual in this jurisdiction, has a right to believe in the views in the leaflet and the right to express the views, so long as it doesn’t stray beyond the law.

‘If he causes harassment, alarm or distress in the future, it would be a criminal offence and he would be punished.’
The judge amended Kelly’s sentence, giving him a six-month curfew between the hours of 3pm and midnight.
Ben Isaacs, representing Kelly, said his client was entitled to hold and express his views and that was ‘one of the cornerstones of democratic society’.
He added: ‘He would say he was distributing God’s message.’
As Mr Isaacs spoke, Kelly shouted across the court: ‘I don’t hate them, I want the salvation of their souls.’

Man United must sack Louis van Gaal after Sunderland loss

Manchester United’s bid to qualify for next season’s Champions League via a top-four finish was dealt what may prove to be a fatal blow as Louis van Gaal’s side succumbed to a dismal 2-1 defeat at Sunderland.
Sam Allardyce’s boys worked far harder than United and fully deserved their victory, with new signings Lamine Kone and Wahbi Khazri performing tremendously.
United, for their part, were poor throughout with Anthony Martial’s expert finished in the first-half the only bright point.
With the pressure on Van Gaal likely to intensify, here are five things we learned from this afternoon’s result.
1) Wayne Rooney and Louis van Gaal have given up on top-four
Both Rooney and Van Gaal seemed resigned to finishing outside the top four and the malaise that has engulfed United on the pitch this season appears to have seeped into the dressing room.
Neither spoke of a good run of results making things easier, and both looked notably downbeat and defeated.
2) Michael Carrick and Morgan Schneiderlin can’t play together
Carrick and Schneiderlin are too similar. The presence of them in the same team encourages more laboured sideways passing.
Marouane Fellaini was a real miss, while his aerial presence defending against set-pieces may have prevented both Sunderland goals.

3) Memphis Depay isn’t a super-sub
Depay has been brought on as a late substitute in two consecutive matches and has added nothing.
Last week his error allowed Chelsea the opportunity to counter-attack against United, whilst yesterday his defensive work from the left-flank was non-existent.
Louis van Gaal has to see this is becoming a problem. The Premier League isn’t the Eredivisie, and you have to expect some defensive work ethic from your wide players.
The youngster simply cannot play in that position until he learns this.
4) United’s defensive organisation has crumbled since Christmas
United were excellent defensively before Christmas and Chris Smalling was arguably the best centre-half in the Premier League.
However, there has been no organisation at the back  in recent weeks and the team’s failyre
5) Manchester United have to make a managerial change
United are going nowhere under Van Gaal. That’s a harsh statement but it’s true. The club are stuck treading water and every defeat brings more questions on the Dutchman’s future.
It makes little sense to dismiss him now, with the chance of finishing in the top-four now very slim, yet the boost such a decision may give to supporters at this point might prove to be positive.

Church of England defends praying for Richard Dawkins

Was the Church of England trolling renowned atheist Richard Dawkins when it sent him ‘prayers’ on Twitter after his stroke?
Well it has denied the accusations and said its message of ‘Prayers for Prof Dawkins and his family’ was genuine.
Reverend Arun Arora, the director of communications for the Archbishops’ Council, wrote in a blogpost: ‘Many recognised the tweet for what it was, a genuine tweet offering prayer for a public person who was unwell.
‘I wish Professor Dawkins well. I hope he makes swift and full recovery, and wish him the best of health. I will pray for him too. It is the very least I can do.’
Professor Dawkins, 74, fell ill on February 5, forcing him to cancel a tour of Australia and New Zealand.
Now recovering at home following four days in hospital, he has described feeling that the stroke had taken him back to childhood because his biggest challenge is buttons.

It turns out this police wildlife officer is really into hunting
Animal rights groups said the position Pc Sharon Roscoe holds is untenable (Picture: SWNS)
Animal rights groups have called for the immediate dismissal of a police officer charged with investigating illegal fox hunting after it emerged that she quite likes a bit of hunting herself.
Pc Sharon Roscoe, 46, is both a wildlife officer for Leicestershire Police, which involves looking into allegations of animal trapping, game poaching, and illegal fox hunting among others, and a member of the Duke of Rutland’s Belvoir Hunt in Lincolnshire.
The Belvoir Hunt was targeted by animal rights groups in December after a video of a dehydrated fox – said to have been held captive for two days in an outbuilding – was released. Now the Hunt Saboteurs Association has launched a petition which calls for the immediate removal of Pc Roscoe, who they say has a conflict of interests.
‘Pc Sharon Roscoe rides regularly with the Belvoir Hunt, whilst simultaneously having responsibility for wildlife and rural crimes within Leicestershire,’ the petition reads.

‘We feel these two positions are completely untenable.’
Campaigners says she is in breach of the Police Regulations 2003, which forbids officers from taking part in activities which may compromise impartiality.
Leicestershire Police said: ‘All police officers and staff are expected to carry out their duties with fairness and impartiality in line with our national Code of Ethics.
‘Any officers who see the law being broken are expected to take action whether they are on or off duty.
‘National guidance around hunting does not prevent officers from taking part in legal and lawful hunt activities outside of work.’

‘Showing scenes like that on national television risks skewing what people think about assisted suicide and sidelines the alternatives, such as hospice and palliative care.
‘It gives the impression that if you’re disabled or terminally ill your life is somehow worthless and you should kill yourself. Suicide is the biggest killer of young men in this country and the more it is normalised, the more people will think of it as a way out.’
However, in the main, people who aired their views about Simon’s decision were moved by what happened and think it is time for a debate on the issue.
