Founder of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Frederick Fasehun, says Pres Buhari led government may run into trouble if they are not careful in their fight against corruption. Fasehun said this in an interview with Daily Independent.
“Look, I am appealing to those in power not to dig into some of these reported scams because it may unearth situations the government itself may not wish to unearth. With the way they are going, national leaders are being involved and a country boasts of its national leaders.
By the time you downgrade every national leader, you disgrace and embarrass them, and there will be no country to think of. I understand plea bargaining is going on, that is good enough”he said

Mohammed Hassan took to his Facebook page to share this photo of two pieces of yam in a plastic bag which is allegedly given to pupils in Kaduna State and wrote;
"Another side of the story...that's why I love social media..2 slices of Yam in a black polythene bag. The widely broadcast school feeding program of Kaduna State govt. In most of the schools I visited many and as at the time of my visit only 35% of the kids are able to get 2 slices of yam in a black polythene without water for breakfast.
Excuse me oga Governor Sir. 2 slices of yam for breakfast in kaduna state for Nursery & Primary school pupils. Please is that what you give your children for breakfast? Can 2 slices of yam be enough for a child of the age between the average of 5 to 12?"

The detained National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh, has said he is cooperating with the Economic and Financial Crime Commission.

The PDP chieftain said he had volunteered statements to the anti-graft agency in which he explained his role in the alleged arms scandal money.

Metuh, in a statement by his Special Assistant Mr. Richard Ihediwa, in Abuja on Tuesday, said it was not true that he had refused to answer questions put forward to him by the EFCC investigators.

He said it was true that former President Goodluck Jonathan gave him N400m for a job which he refused to disclose.

Metuh had claimed earlier that he executed a project for the President, but refused to state the amount he was paid for the unknown job.

In the statement by Ihediwa, Metuh who has been in detention since Tuesday last week, still refused to disclose the job he executed for the former President that fetched him the huge sum.

He said he would only disclose the job he did for the former President in court.

Ihediwa said, “This office wishes to state categorically that Chief Metuh has fully cooperated with investigators within his constitutionally guaranteed rights.

“In exercise of his rights, he has since given his statement to the EFCC wherein he submitted that he received the sum of N400m from the former President for an assignment, which he executed to the satisfaction of the former President.

“In further exercise of his rights, Metuh has also indicated his readiness to make public the nature of this assignment, but only in an open court in line with the laws of the land, and where his statement would not be distorted by anybody.

“Metuh, therefore, believes that his continued incarceration and failure to charge him to court are deliberately intended to prevent him from telling his own story in the open court for all Nigerians to know.”

He said that contrary to the impression that the issue of N400m was a product of investigation, it was actually a product of Metuh’s voluntary statement.

BY CHIDI OBINECHE
The lingering feud between President Goodluck Jonathan and his estranged godfather, former President Olusegun Obasanjo may have taken an irretrievable dive for the worst, Sunday Sun learnt over the weekend. The misunderstanding, which began soon after the election of Jonathan in 2011, and gradually built up has emphatically positioned Obasanjo as the rallying point of the opposition.
The rift has been largely attributed to alleged sidelining of Obasanjo in the affairs of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the government. But
pro government sources insisted it was the inability of the former president to dictate the tone of Jonathan’s government, control, and ultimately draft in another protégé to take over from him in 2015 that nurtured and sustained it. To show his disenchantment with the scheme of things, Obasanjo resigned his chairmanship of the party’s Board of Trustees (BOT) in 2012, and has since then openly aligned with opponents of Jonathan’s administration. His associates within the party especially in the three geo-political zones of the North have since teamed up with him leading to
Large scale defections from the party to the budding All Progressives Congress (APC).Although the former president is yet to join the APC, there are clear indications that he may likely do that as soon as some conditions before the party were met. The prime condition is to be given the capacity to influence the selection of the presidential candidate of the party, while the candidate in turn picks his running mate, unfettered. The leadership of the APC, at the moment is not settled on the demand especially as it would obfuscate the vision and streamlined objective of wresting power from the PDP.
The leadership hierarchy is also wary of the impact it would have on the collective leadership arrangement presently in place and ipso factor whittle down the influence of notable leaders who envisioned and founded the parties and the merger arrangements. Although Obasanjo’s romance with the top-echelon of the party is deepening with each passing moment, the body language of the leaders is yet to indicate he would be given that latitude. Although the APC is desperate to clinch power next year, it is a bit careful not to go into crises before its convention, especially when so many political heavyweights are jockeying to fly the party’s banner.
A party source confided in Sunday Sun that, “The matter has never been brought up formally at any meeting of any organ of the party.”
The source, however, acknowledged the demand, but described it as “mere rumour.” As the battle to remove the obstacles in the APC before the former president rages, there are indications that Jonathan’s planned declaration to run for president in April may prove to be the oyster. In a bid to stop Jonathan from what he considers an impossible mission, Obasanjo has accelerated moves to railroad influential political and ex-military heavyweights in the North into his project.
The swansong on his lips is that Jonathan’s re-en-try into the race would heat up ethno religious passions and lead to the disintegration of the country. He insists the presidential slot should go to the North, and to demonstrate his sincerity, he says he would give a free hand to them to pick someone “who is good for the job.”Obasanjo’s plot, however, wobbled when the Presidency quickly moved to counter it. The counter move led to the cessation of hostilities against Jonathan from a good number of the northern leaders including former military leaders, Gen Ibrahim Babangida (retd), Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd), and the Chairman of the Northern Governors
Forum, Babangida Aliyu. Indeed, the rapprochement necessitated the recent reshuffle in the Federal cabinet with each of them having nominees amongst the incoming ministers. Unfazed about the development, Obasanjo is trudging on with an iron cast determination to frustrate Jonathan’s re-election bid. Part of his new plan is to accentuate criticisms of the government of Jonathan, throw up the warts and engender anti-Jonathan sentiment across the nation. Upon Jonathan’s formal declaration, he will most likely dump the PDP and lead the presidential campaign of the APC, especially in the South-west and North where the party has its stronghold. An aide to the president told Sunday Sun that government has been aware of the plot.
He said; “It is not new. It began when the Secretary to the Government of the Federation was to be appointed. He was in far-away China and he insisted the appointment must wait until he returned. There is nothing in his new offensive.” Sunday Sun learnt that the North, which Obasanjo is banking on to stop Jonathan, has been infiltrated by Jonathan elements, and may not likely vote enbloc. While some Northern leaders prefer to remain passive and watch the unfolding events, others are singing different tunes. This has greatly reduced apprehension in the camp of Jonathan as he prepares to recontest.

Barely 24 hours after gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect killed over 43 students in Yobe State, the dreaded insurgents Thursday killed no fewer than 37 persons in three separate attacks in Adamawa State.

Chairman of the Madagali local government Area of Adamawa state, Maina Ularamu confirmed the sad incident. He said, “a large number of militants carried out three separate attacks on Shuwa and Kirchinga in my local government area and on Michika in neighbouring Michika (district)”.
“The gunmen divided themselves into three groups and separately attacked the three locations,” he told AFP.

It was gathered that in Shuwa, several buildings were razed, including a Christian theological college and a section of a secondary school.

A local resident, Kwaje Bitrus, told newsmen that three bodies were recovered from the seminary and a total of 20 were killed in and around the village.

In Kirchinga, a resident who gave his name as Samuel Garba said the gunmen were all dressed in military uniform.

“The gunmen killed eight people in our village and burnt many houses,” he added.

“Four people have so far been confirmed dead in Michika,” another Abdul Kassim, a resident of the area said.

In a statement, the military confirmed the attacks on multiple communities in the state, but said that only one soldier and three civilians were killed. Troops repelling the raids also killed six suspected Islamists, according to the statement.

An Ikeja High Court on Thursday fixed March 3 for its ruling on an application filed by Fred Ajudua.
Ajudua, in the application, is asking the court to quash the N1 billion fraud charge preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye fixed the date after hearing arguments from both the EFCC and Ajudua’s counsel on whether the charge should be dismissed.
Ajudua is being prosecuted for defrauding a former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi, of about $5.9 million (about N1 billion).
Moving the preliminary notice of objection, Ajudua’s counsel, Mr Olalekan Ojo, said the 14-count charge against his client was made under a repealed law.
Ojo said the defendant was charged under the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act of 1995 as amended by Act No.62 of 1999.
“It is my submission that a charge made under a repealed law is fundamentally defective and liable to be quashed.
“There is no legally convincing charge before Your Lordship that will allow the court to exercise any form of jurisdiction on this matter,’’ he said.
Ojo said that Bamaiyi, in his petition to the EFCC, had disclosed self-confession to various crimes including conspiracy, aiding and abetting, money laundering and corrupting of public officers.
“As a court with zero tolerance for illegality and corruption, Your Lordship has the inherent power to refer this admitted violation of the money laundering legislation to the appropriate authorities for investigation and possible prosecution,’’ he said.
Responding, the EFCC’s counsel, Mr Seidu Atteh, urged the court to dismiss the application and ask Ajudua to take his plea.
Atteh argued that Section 6 of the Interpretation Act conferred validity on the charge against the defendant.
He said: “Substantive Law is governed by the law in force as at the time the offence was committed.
“The repeal of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act of 1995 as amended by Act No.62 of 1999 does not affect the offence that was committed then.’’
In the charge, the EFCC accused Ajudua of conspiring with others (now at large) to perpetrate the fraud between November 2004 and June 2005.
According to the EFCC, the defendant defrauded Bamaiyi while they were remanded at the Kirikiri Prison in Lagos.
The commission said Ajudua obtained the money from Bamaiyi, claiming that it represented the professional fees charged by Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), to handle his case.
Ajudua was also alleged to have claimed that the money would help to facilitate Bamaiyi’s release from prison. (NAN)

From EMMANUEL UZOR, Onitsha
Uneasy calm reigns in  Onitsha, Anambra State as child theft has assumed a dangerous dimension in the commercial city with the emergence of a syndicate that allegedly steals  children from Calabar, Cross River State and uses  Onitsha as its sales point.
However, luck ran out on two suspected female members of the syndicate yesterday when they were apprehended at separate spots  by policemen attached to the Okpoko Police Division at  Akwa Ibom Park axis  along Onitsha-Owerri Road after an unidentified  woman was arrested for allegedly stealing two babies from Calabar and selling  them in Onitsha.
Another woman suspected to be a member of the child trafficking syndicate was also arrested by operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) attached to Okpoko Police Division at the Calabar Motor Park on Onitsha-Owerri Road.
Daily Sun gathered that the suspects, who were undergoing interrogation at the office of Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mr. Emeka Ugwu, were arrested following a tip off by some staff of the Akwa Ibom Motor Park and passersby, who suspected their movements.
According to one of the witnesses simply identified as Obinna, one of the suspects was a regular visitor to the park, and  had always come on a weekly basis with different children after which she would return to Calabar, leaving the children behind.
Obinna said nemesis caught up with the women when one of them came into the park in a vehicle belonging to the Transport Company of Anambra State (TRACAS) with a newly born baby with  blood stains.
“The lady comes to the park almost every week; at times at two weeks interval and we discovered that each time she appeared, she had two or three children mostly day old and one-week old children. There was a day she carried a baby with stain of blood showing that the child had  just been delivered. So, today (yesterday) she came  from Calabar and because we have been monitoring her, we noticed that she had two children with her. But when she resurfaced  to board a bus back to Calabar without those kids, that was when we confirmed our suspicion and invited the police,” he said.

by Gunmen and Kidnappers appear to be on the prowl again in Abia State as they have kidnapped two market women and a six-month old baby boy.
They perpetrated their nefarious act by feigning to be operators of taxi cabs and motorcyclists Aba, the commercial nucleus of the state, and Umuahia, the state capital.
Yesterday, two women travelling to Uzuakoli market in Bende Local Government Area of the state were kidnapped and taken to an unknown destination.
Their families are now in agony, misery and guessing where the destination was.
One of the women, simply identified as Mrs. Nkechi, was said to be a nursing mother of an eightmonth old baby.
She trades in garri and other allied food stuff and was going to the local market for stock, not knowing she was to be a victim of kidnappers posing as motorists.
Reliable sources disclosed that though the women live in Umuahia, they hailed from Ebonyi State.
Eyewitness accounts disclosed that the kidnap suspects were seen speeding towards the Umuahia/ Aba/Enugu expressway after their operation.
Also, on Monday, some gunmen reportedly abducted a six- month old baby boy at Amapu Umuaja village in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State.
It was gathered that at about 9.30pm on the day of the incident when most villagers had gone to bed, two gunmen on a motorcycle stormed the compound of the victim’s parents, broke into their house and forcefully snatched the baby from his mother, Mrs. Peace Chikezie.
The whereabouts of the baby is unknown.
After snatching the baby from the mother, the gunmen reportedly fled, and in an apparent move to stop the woman from alerting other villagers, they forcefully collected her mobile phone.
It was after the hoodlums had fled with the baby that the mother raised the alarm and a search team was set to comb the entire neighbourhood to see if the marauders could be apprehended, but all to no avail.
Nobody in the area was able to adduce reason for the baby’s abduction, but there was a general belief that ritual for money making could be the motivating factor.
Some villagers who spoke to our correspondent described the incident as barbaric and satanic, stressing that this was the first time such would be happening in the community.
Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, Geoffrey Ogbonna, could not be a reached as at the time of filing this report.
However, a senior police officer who would not want his name in print confirmed the incident. He said the matter had been reported at the Umuoba Divisional Police Headquarters for proper investigation, adding that police were already on top of the matter to recover the child and also apprehend the hoodlums.

Director General of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Muda Yusuf gives his opinion on the suspension of CBN Governor, sanusi Lamido. A Federal High Court sitting in Akure yesterday remanded in prison custody, two suspects, Mrs Happiness Ogundeji and Mr Abiodun Ogundeji presently standing trial over their alleged connection with a baby factory in Ilutitu ,Okitipupa.

The trial Judge, Justice Mohammed Ishaq Sani gave the order at the resumed hearing of the matter .

Counsel to the suspects, Mr Festus Keyamo informed the court of the application for bail, dated February 23 and filed on February 24 ,2014.

Keyanmo, told the court that he had filed bail applications for each of the accused persons.
He therefore prayed for consolidation of the applications in which they asked for an order admitting the suspect to bail.

According to him, “The constitution guarantees the freedom of the accused persons, since they are presumed innocent until they are found guilty”.

The lawyer urged the court to admit his client to bail so as to afford them the opportunity to stand trial ,adding that ‘’the discretion of the court is unfettered.’’

The prosecution lawyer, Barr. Chedu Ajaegbu, who represented the Attorney General of the Federation, also informed the court of a Counter Affidavit dated February 26,2014 in which he attached some evidence to prove that the accused persons should not be granted bail

He pointed out that the first accused, Mrs Ogundeji was facing similar charge in Enugu and Imo State High Courts.

The prosecution counsel submitted that the woman in the two states where she committed the same offence ,was granted bail, but she has since stopped attending courts for her trial before she relocated to Ondo State.

But, Keyamo contended that the prosecution counsel should display before the court, evidence of bench warrant against her in the two states.

Justice Sani then adjourned his ruling on the bail application.

However, Ajaegbu told the court that he could not take the accused persons back to Lagos until determination of the court on bail application because ,he brought them from Lagos and kept them in the custody of the Immigration Service.

He therefore applied that the duo be remanded in prison custody, which was accordingly granted by the court.

Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers state who said recently that he has not had a proper discussion with Pres. Goodluck Jonathan for some time now, has been using different fora to send missives and messages to the president. The latest intermediary is the British Minister for Africa and Member of Parliament, Mr. Mark Simmonds, who paid the governor a visit in Port Harcourt, the Rivers capital.
Amaechi called on Britain to appeal to Pres. Jonathan to intensify his effort in the battle against oil theft and corruption. The governor told his guest that he doesn’t know if the “federal government is serious about combating oil theft.”
The Rivers governor had asked former President Olusegun Obasanjo to covey a similar message during the latter’s visit recently to commission projects in the state. But Obasanjo refused to be a messenger and asked the governor to take his message to Aso Rock himself.
However, Amaechi playing host to Simmonds in Port Harcourt expressed concern over the way the Federal Government was going about the crusade against oil theft in the country, which he noted, has largely depleted the country’s resources.  He appealed to the British Minister for Africa to raise the issue of corruption and the seeming insincerity on the part of the Federal Government to confront oil theft.
“For two years now, the Federal Government has refused entry into the country, two surveillance helicopters paid for by the Rivers State Government. These helicopters have cameras and their job is to fly all over and whoever that is stealing oil, you will see. And the helicopter will have a monitor with the Army, Police, Air force and with the Department of State Security, DSS. I don’t know how much you have seen about oil theft, and I don’t know if the Federal Government is serious about combating oil theft.
“Why I say this is that For two years now, the Federal Government has refused entry into the country, two surveillance helicopters paid for by the Rivers State Government. These helicopters have cameras and their job is to fly all over and whoever that is stealing oil, you will see. And the helicopter will have a monitor with the Army, Police, Air force and with the Department of State Security, DSS. I suspect the refusal may be for political reasons. The helicopters have been packed in America for two years now, and the Rivers State Government is paying demurrage on them.
“We paid for it, not the Federal Government, and we are prepared to help them, but the President has emphatically refused to allow the two helicopters into the country in the past two years. We are still paying demurrage.” Amaechi said.

BEVERLY HILLS, February 25, (THEWILL) -  Borno State Students, under the umbrella of the National Union of Borno State Students (NUBOSS), Tuesday called on President Goodluck Jonathan to stop blaming the state governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, for the escalation of the Boko Haram insurgency in the state.

Calling on the President to pay a visit to the state in order  to appreciate what the people are going through, the students said

the president would only understand the frustration of Governor Shettima “if he pays a visit to Bama, Gwoza, Konduga or any other parts of the state where the insurgents have wreaked wanton havoc.”

Making the call at a media briefing  in Maiduguri, the state capital, the National Chairman of NUBOSS. Comrade Isah Mohammed Biu, said though President Jonathan  has denied the rumour of a plan to replace Shettima with a military administrator, there won’t be such call in the first instance President Jonathan had  visited the affected parts of the state.

The students therefore said the Federal Government, rather than Governor Shettima, should take responsibility for the escalation of the crisis,  saying with the declaration of emergency rule in the state, “ the security of the state automatically shifted to the Federal Government.”

A Federal High Court, sitting in Enugu, has convicted and sentenced one Gift Onyegam to 10 years imprisonment without an option of fine for duping a blind teacher, Rosemary Iheanacho, of  N830, 000 on the pretext that he would help her son secure employment in an oil company.
The convict, who pleaded not guilty, was also ordered to pay the sum of N711, 000 in restitution to the victim.
A statement by the Head, Media & Publicity, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Wilson Uwajaren, on Tuesday in Abuja, said Onyegam, was arrested in 2013 following a complaint by the victim, and was prosecuted by the EFCC on four counts of conspiracy and obtaining by false pretence.
Iheanacho was tricked into believing the scam when, in July 2012, she received a call from one Patrick Abah whom she met at a National Youth Service Scheme Orientation Camp in 2009.
He told her that he could help her secure employment with Shell Petroleum Development Company through his in-law, Okoh Ayabaye, a purported Engineer with the oil major in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The victim got interested and told them that her son needed employment and she  proceeded to pay various sums amounting to N830, 000 into three bank accounts provided by the tricksters.

A High Court sitting in Port Harcourt on Monday sentenced a police sergeant, Clement Indyel, to death for killing two persons while engaging in a fight with a bus driver over a N100 bribe.

Two other persons identified as Ali Bello and Auwalu Kwale, bagged life imprisonment each for their involvement in the crime.
Justice Biobele Georgewill, who delivered judgement on the matter, said Indyel and the two others conspired to murder Chinyeaka Kamalu and Ugochukwu Harcourt.
Georgewill, who recalled that the convicts were charged with felony, conspiracy and murder, said they (convicts) attacked the victims, who were passengers.
He added that the report of the autopsy conducted on the victims revealed that they (victims) sustained gunshot injuries that led to their death.
The trial judge maintained that the injuries sustained by the victims were as a result of the bullets from the AK-47 rifles used by the policemen.
According to Justice Georgewill, the incident that led to the sudden demise of Kamalu and Harcourt occurred on January 17, 2010 in Port Harcourt.
“The result of the autopsy conducted on the remains of the victims, which was tendered in court, showed that the wound sustained by them was bullet wound from AK47 rifles used by the officers.
“The only way the souls of the victims can rest in peace for their unjust murder by police officers who were meant to protect them is to allow the law to take its course,” he said.
Sister to the late Kamalu, Mrs. Chinyere Ideoha, expressed delight over the ruling of the court, even as she added that the judgement could not bring back her dead sister to life.
