The governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, has reiterated his readiness to account for every federal allocation received by the state during the two and a half years of his administration.
Okorocha, who was apparently reacting to the call by Professor Viola Onwuliri, supervising minister of Foreign Affairs to give account on how the allocations received by his administration from the Federal Government had been spent, said that he was ready to give comprehensive account of how every kobo was spent.
Speaking through his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, Okorocha challenged the minister to organise a public forum where he and two former governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who collectively handled the affairs of the state for 12 years would come and give account on how they managed the state resources during their respective tenures.
According to the governor’s media aide, the initial reaction of the government was to join issues with the minister, who was the running mate of Chief Ikedi Ohakim in the 2011 gubernatorial election in the state as that would have been a waste of time and unnecessary distraction. But that the government has accepted the demand for accountability on the condition that the two previous PDP administrations that had governed the state between 1999-2011 would be involved in the account rendering to the people of Imo State.
“The state government has accepted the demand of the minister on the condition that the exercise should be all embracing.
“The PDP had governed the state for 12 years from 1999 to 2011 and Governor Okorocha of the APC is less than three years in office as governor, so, Imo people would want a situation where the minister with other stakeholders would gather the two former governors produced by the PDP, with Governor Okorocha to respectively give account of what they did with the state allocations.”
Onwuemedo further stated that, “while the two PDP governors would be telling Imo people what they did with all the monies they collected on behalf of the state for 12 years, Governor Okorocha will do the same for less than three years.
“And the exercise will be a public event that would warrant Imo people to be around and the state government would pay for the live coverage of the event and the onus is now on the minister to choose a date and the venue.”
