At the early hours of today, the former village Head of Obu Otukpa, Chief Gabriel Ameh (popular called IJALA) was shot in his house by armed robbers.
The ‘bad boys’ forced themselves into his room and asked his wife who is a business woman to surrender her money. She told them she didn’t have enough cash at home and tendered the little she had on her.
After collecting the availlable cash, the gang was not satisfied with the development and he then open fire on the husband, who just returned from a church programe.
Chief Ijala did not die immediately because he was rushed to the hospital where he was able to mention one of the boys who carried out the heinous act. Suprisingly, the guy he mention was his own step brother.
Though Chief Ijala gave up in the hospital, the youths of the community decided to go after the culprits, with the help of the police they were able to apprehend 3 of the boys.
While the police were trying to take the boys round the area to get the rest of them, the angry youths took into mob action and stone 2 of them to death before police could rescue the 3rd member of the gang who is now giving the police the clue to arresting others.
Otukpa which was hitherto known as a ‘cool area’ is gradually degenerating into a a terror zone with cases of robbery being reported on daily basis.
The presence of the local vigilantes group been organised by the youths helped to make appreciable progress last year. But as soon as the operations of the local vigilantes group was brought to halt, the men of the underworld began their nefarious activities, most of which are being targetted on innocent business men and women in Otukpa.
