Wife of the Governor, Osun State, Mrs. Sherifat Aregbesola
Wife of the Osun State Governor, Mrs. Sherifat Aregbesola, says lack of good parental care is the cause of indiscipline among pupils in public schools.
She said this in Osogbo on Thursday during a party she organised for children in the state.
She said the school reclassification policy introduced by the administration of her husband was a good one aimed at repositioning education in the state.
She also alleged that some politicians were responsible for fuelling the crises in schools, with the aim of “discrediting the good works embarked upon by the administration” of Governor Rauf Aregbesola.
Recently, a student of Government Technical College attacked a teacher with a machete, while a pupil of St. Mark Anglican Secondary School stabbed one of his colleagues.
The governor’s wife said, “We parents are not discharging our responsibilities the way we ought to. Many parents don’t have time to monitor their children again.
“Although we should work hard to provide for our families, we must also create time to monitor our children, check them in schools and know their friends.
“Many parents no longer allow neighbours or teachers to discipline their children and this is very wrong. You cannot be with them all the time, we should allow others to correct them.
“The problem of indiscipline is the fault of parents. What is happening in public schools in the state also has its roots in politics, as some politicians are working to discredit the government.”
She warned pupils against anti-social behaviour, saying such could destroy their future.
She also warned against child abuse and molestation.
According to her, disallowing children of school age to attend schools is contrary to the laws of the state and anybody caught would be made to face the wrath of the law.
Soliciting the support of the people for her husband’s administration, she said the government had invested a lot of fund to reverse the rot in the education sector in the state.
