A Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Tuesday remanded two unemployed men charged with alleged terror, kidnapping and attempted murder.
The accused, Bolanle Solaja, 31, and Ibrahim Balogun, 21, reside in Igbogbo and Ibeshe areas of Ikorodu, near Lagos.
They are each standing trial on a 14-count charge of terror, kidnapping, attempted murder, assault and illegal possession of ammunitions.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Counsel to the defendants, Mr I.K. Thany requested bail on behalf of his clients.
The Magistrate, Mrs Ipaye Nwachukwu, however, refused the verbal bail application and ruled that a formal bail application be filed before the court.
“The court reserves the power to remand after examining reason for an accused’s arraignment.
“In this case, in view of the seriousness of the offences, application for bail should be made formal.
“The police case file should be duplicated and forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP),” Nwachukwu said.
She adjourned the case to Feb. 14 for the advice of the DPP.
Earlier the Prosecutor, ASP. Felix Ifijen, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on Jan. 29.
He said the accused had kidnapped, terrorised and attempted to murder one Adeniran Akinola at Unity Estate, Bayeku in Ikorodu.
Ifijen alleged that the accused with others at large abducted Akinola who was employed as a casual worker by a developer within the estate.
He explained that the accused terrorised and assaulted Akinola cutting him with a machete in the head, neck and back before putting him into a dry well.
Ifijen said that Solaja and Balogun terrorised residents in the area by displaying cutlasses guns and other dangerous weapons.
“They had in their possession a loaded Dell Emerald-Magnum pump action gun, a local pistol, 4 cutlasses and several live cartridge,” the prosecutor alleged.
Ifijen submitted that the offence contravened sections of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.
