When a friend reported 65-year-old Marion Williams missing for five days, authorities discovered a gruesome scene — the man’s body had been almost completely consumed by a wild black bear.
Officials reported Friday that the Northern California man had likely died of a heart attack outside his trailer in a remote wooded area before the bear got to his body and ate it, as determined by Humboldt County Deputy Coroner Roy Horton.
Wildlife officials don’t believe the bear is still in the area near the man’s home and as such have called off attempts to trap and kill the animal, California Department of Fish and Wildlife spokesman Andrew Hughan said.
“We’re not going to find the bear,” Hughan said. “The bear was behaving naturally.”
The coroner’s investigation of William’s death revealed no signs that he had been killed by the bear attack, rather Horton believes the bear discovered the man’s dead body then dragged it to a nearby den.
“It looks like he collapsed and died,” Horton said. “The bear comes along and sees a potential food source.”
There has never been a reported case in California of a black bear killing a human. This is the first known case of the ominous animal eating a person’s body, according to the wildlife spokesman.
