A 40-year-old man has been charged with the murders of a mother and daughter who went missing in Auckland over seven years ago.
Police have charged the South Auckland man over the deaths of Mubarak Yusef (known as Pakeeza Faizal) and her daughter Juwairiyah 'Jojo' Kalim.
Police had a breakthrough in their investigation yesterday when they discovered human remains under the Takapuna Landing Bridge which they believe belong to the pair.
Ms Faizal and Jojo were only reported missing in January last year, prompting a massive investigation by police.
The two victims were allegedly killed in late December 2006-early 2007 in Howick.
The arrested man was known to both victims but is not Jojo's father, police say.
A 64-year-old South Auckland man has also been charged with being an accessory after the fact to both murders.
Both accused will appear in the Manukau District Court today.
Police are confident the human remains are those of Ms Faizal and Jojo but a formal identification process has yet to be carried out.
Detective Inspector Dave Lynch says the delay in the missing person report posed significant challenges to the investigation.
"A number of avenues of investigation that would have been available to us at the time were unable to be followed due to the delay," he says.
