People Magazine said she wrote on Facebook: "Goodbye to all my dear friends and family that I love.
"Today is the day I have chosen to pass away with dignity in the face of my terminal illness, this terrible brain cancer that has taken so much from me & but would have taken so much more.
"The world is a beautiful place, travel has been my greatest teacher, my close friends and folks are the greatest givers. I even have a ring of support around my bed as I type & Goodbye world. Spread good energy. Pay it forward!"
Local newspapers have also reported that Facebook posts from family indicate she has taken her life.
Ms Maynard was diagnosed with a severe form of cancer in April, which doctors predicted would give her just over a year to live.
With only a few weeks to live she began a worldwide social media campaign to expand dying-with-dignity laws across the US.
She announced she would die on her own terms with a lethal dose of drugs - permitted under Oregon law - rather than suffer the debilitating effects of her spreading cancer. She'd originally planned to end her life November 1, but supporters said that was always a flexible date.
