17 things you only understand if your brother or sister is your best friend

It takes an extremely special person to earn the coveted position of your best friend in the whole world – and who is better qualified than your brother or sister.
You have grown into adults together, shared some equally joyous and harrowing experiences and understand each other like no other. Fantastic friends from outside of the sibling circle will come and go – each having some kind of influence – but there will never be anyone so solidly there for you like bro or sis.
If you class your sibling as your best friend, then you will relate to most of this.
1. You protect each other – fiercely
You can insult each other, fight with each other and hate each other – but no-one else is allowed to hurt them in any way. Not on your watch or theirs. If someone is even mildly threatening to your sibling then you will be there, all guns blazing. And they will do the same for you in a heartbeat.
2. Your fights are the worst

And it’s only because you care. You wouldn’t bother having the tantrum to end all tantrums if someone else wound you up. It’s because you care for each other so much that the battles are so explosive. But you always make up before long and no bout, no matter how violent or callous, will ever come between you.
3. You share so many memories
Childhood jokes, that weird kid that used to live next door that no-one remembers and stuff your parents did that you can now both gang up on them years later for being too cruel – you both remember it all. And no matter how often you meet, you will always reminisce to some degree.
4. You have the same sense of humour

You don’t know anyone as funny as your brother or sister. And there are no real boundaries to your jokes as you both understand each other’s limits. As they are generally the same.
5. You can share anything with them
Sibling honour dictates that it will go no further. After all, you have both got enough dirt on each other from over the years that it simply wouldn’t be worth anyone’s while to break that trust.
6. They have your back at family occasions
The crushing boredom of a family reunion with distant relative is shared by your sibling. At least you have some support as you both endure the horror. Even the occasional knowing look or simultaneous eye roll will keep you going.
7. You support each other in hard times

Over the years, you have seen each other cry, hit rock bottom and endure loss and heartache. You have always been there for each other and you always will.
8. You can be yourself around them
Developing a best friendship can take some compromise and a little acting until that bond is made. Not with your sibling, who already gets you and knows everything there is to know about you.
9. You share everything
From clothes and video games to food and secrets, what’s yours is theirs and vice versa.
10. Their new love interests are always vetted

And they check yours out too. After all, this new person will potentially become a brother or sister in law and will inevitably syphon away some of the time you spend with your sibling. They have to be deemed worthy.
11. They tell it like it is
They are your go-to person for advice as you know you will get honesty from them. Many friends will tell them what you want to hear – but your sibling is not afraid of giving you the cold, harsh truth.
12. You share friendships
You spend so much time together that many of their friends are your friends. And at big gatherings, they are still your favourite person there.
13. You have in-jokes that no-one else will understand
Most of them originated from when you were both in primary school.
14. There is never awkwardness
As life goes on, siblings can move further away for careers, marriage or travel. But no matter how long it is between the time you speak to each other, the bond is instantly reformed when you reunite, with not of that awkward ‘so…how have you been?’ chat.
15. You will enjoy nights in
eating
And the food will always be a takeaway – as your sibling knows your order like the back of their hand and neither of you are conscious about pigging out in front of each other. The likely way you’ll spend the evening is playing on video games you used to love, watching childhood films or cartoons and getting drunk while talking about stupid things you did as teens.
16. No difficult decisions at milestones
There really is no-one else you would even consider as a best man, maid of honour or godparent.
17. The love between siblings is unconditional
The bond that you have is beyond family and beyond friendship. With the love for a brother or sister and the love for a best friend, you really are the luckiest person to be able to have such a special best friend and you will cherish your sibling forever.
