The indie singer has questioned Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Paybe and Naill Horan’s artistic credibility because of their X Factor background.
‘They’re four guys who queued up outside an arena to sing in front of Simon Cowell,’ Matt told Spin magazine. ‘Do they really have any artistic credibility? That sounds like a mean thing to say, but it’s a good question. Like, do they?’
Ouch.
‘They just wanted to play me this song that they said was really, really inspired by us,’ Healy said. Upon listening to said track, Healy decided that it was too similar to his band’s own track, Girls.
Healy told One Direction and their team ‘Listen guys, fill your boots, the song doesn’t sound that much like Girls. But the guitar and the whole vibe of it is a complete lift. So take the guitars off, and we’re good.’
Playing the two songs back to back, it’s clear that the song in question, One Direction’s Change Your Ticket, and The 1975’s Girls share a few qualities.
One Direction began their hiatus after performing for the last time as a band on The X Factor’s 2015 final in December.
Since then, ex-member Zayn Malik has released his first single as a solo artist, Pillow Talk, which has eclipsed all of 1D’s achievements in debuting at number one on the Billboard 100.
Metro.co.uk have contacted 1D and Simon Cowell’s rep for comment.
