To Kill A Mockingbird author Nelle Harper Lee has died aged 89.
She is reported to have passed away in her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama, US, according to AL.com and her publisher Penguin Random House.
Mary Jackson, the city clerk in Lee’s hometown of Monroeville, Alabama, confirmed that Lee had died.
The news was announced on the website of Ol’ Curiosities & Book Shoppe.
In a blog post, owner Spencer Madrie said: ‘The world has lost a brilliant mind and a great writer.

Publisher Penguin has paid tribute to the author.

Harper Lee’s literary agent Andrew Nurnberg said: ‘Knowing Nelle these past few years has been not just an utter delight but an extraordinary privilege.
‘When I saw her just six weeks ago, she was full of life, her mind and mischievous wit as sharp as ever. She was quoting Thomas More and setting me straight on Tudor history.
‘We have lost a great writer, a great friend and a beacon of integrity.’
Lee suffered a stroke in 2007, but recovered well and resumed her life in the Alabama city.
Last year the author announced she would publish a sequel to her first and only novel.
Go Set A Watchman, which was actually written before To Kill A Mockingbird but is effectively a sequel, was released in July.
Lee said at the time it’s ‘a pretty decent effort’.
