Badminton: China superstar Lin Dan suffers shock upset at OUE Singapore Open

The world No. 4 and two-time Olympic champion gets dumped out of the semi-finals by world No.56 Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia.

SINGAPORE: Two-time Olympic badminton champion and world No. 4 Lin Dan of China was beaten by Indonesia's Sony Dwi Kuncoro in a huge upset at the OUE Singapore Open.
After compatriot and top seed Chen Long's surprise exit in the quarter-final, Lin became the tournament favourite heading into his semi-final with world No. 56 Sony.
But the second seed failed to live up to expectations early on as it was the Indonesian who took the first game 21-10. With his back to the wall, Lin fought back in the second game. It was tied at 9-all before Lin pulled away to win it 21-17.
Still it was Sony who showed his mettle to win the thrilling decider 22-20. The 2004 Olympic bronze medallist will face South Korea's Son Wan Ho in the final.

In the women's draw, third seed Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand took on Japan's eighth seed Akane Yamaguchi in the first semi-final. After taking the first game quite easily, Intanon was pushed to her limits before she won the match 21-12, 22-20. Intanon will face China's Sun Yu in the final.
