The Memphis police had no idea what they were going to find when they received a call about noises coming from a dumpster behind a Family Dollar store. What they found in the dumpster defies belief.
Instead of taking their unwanted dog to the shelter
and surrendering him, whoever had this dog decided to do something
extremely cruel. They dumped their dog in the dumpster and covered the
dog with plastic. The dog, as can be seen from the pictures, was curled
up amid the garbage, terrified, heartbroken, and confused. The dog had
cuts on his ears and seemed to be in pain when walking.
He was taken to Memphis Animal Services. They have since
found out that he has two ear infections and is heartworm positive. He
is a sweet dog but very depressed. His eyes look like the eyes of
someone who doesn't know what happened -- how he ended up in a cage in a
strange shelter. Being left in the dumpster with the lid shut tight,
under the garbage, must have been a terrifying experience for this dog.
The big question, of course, is how any human being could
leave a dog in a dumpster. If the dog had not cried -- or perhaps
whimpered -- he could be dead. Dying in a dumpster is not a humane way
to die. And this dog, who is sweet and gentle, is not ready to die.
While his Facebook thread
shows that there is some interest in adopting him, until a dog is out
of the shelter, he is not safe. Offers fall through and sometimes
rescues back out when fosters change their minds. Please share his story
so that on Monday, he can leave the shelter and go somewhere safe.
There may be more information on his Facebook thread.
He is ID #286277 and he will be available for adoption on Monday. He is
located at Memphis Animal Services, 2350 Appling City Cove, Memphis, TN
38133. The phone number at the shelter is (901) 636-PAWS (7297).
