KUALA LUMPUR: Italy’s Serie B football club FC Bari 1908
S.P.A now has a new Malaysian owner, Malaysian media reported on Tuesday
(Apr 12).
The second-tier club said in a statement on Monday it had
come to preliminary agreement with businessman Noordin Ahmad, who has
acquired a 50-per cent stake in the club, the New Straits Times
reported. No monetary value was disclosed.
A press conference will be held to announce the details in the next
few days, said club president Gianluca Paparesta. The former referee
added that the club’s board members have been informed of the sale.
A consortium led by Paparesta bought the club for €2 million
in March 2014, after Bari had been declared bankrupt in March that
year.
Bari is currently third in Italy's second division, nine
points behind second-placed Cagliari. Only the top two teams are
automatically promoted to Serie A.
The club, based on Italy's eastern coast, was founded in 1908, but have never been higher than 7th in the Italian top flight.
Among the prominent names to have graced the club are former
England international David Platt - who moved from Aston Villa in 1991
for a British record £5.5 million - and the Chelsea-bound current coach
of the Italian national team, Antonio Conte, who helped Bari reach
promotion to Serie A in 2009.
