J.K. Simmons Reveals Playing Commissioner Gordon in 'Justice League' Is 'Intimidating'

Even Oscar winners can get a little nervous about hanging out with superheroes!

ET sat down with J.K. Simmons to talk about his film The Meddler on Friday, where he revealed just how he feels about playing Commissioner Jim Gordon in the upcoming Justice League films.

“Well, it’s intimidating in a way,” he admitted. “You know, it’s just another opportunity to see what I can do with a truly iconic character in that comic book world, which is a really fun place to go play.”

Simmons, 61, is no stranger to that world, having played Daily Bugle editor-in-chief J. Jonah Jameson opposite Tobey Maguire in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and voicing the character in various TV shows and video games.

The role of Commissioner Gordon was most recently played by Gary Oldman in all three of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight films, and the 58-year-old actor recently told ET that he was "absolutely happy" to have Simmons step into the role next.

"He can take on Jim Gordon with my blessing," Oldman said. "I hope he’s fantastic in it."

After Simmons was cast as Gordon, some fans called for the two actors to swap comic book roles, which would require Oldman to sign on as Jameson in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. The Dawn of the Planet of the Apes star was non-committal about the idea of taking on the role, however, telling ET, “Let’s not take it off the table."

At least, it wasn’t a no!

Interestingly, Simmons and Oldman have a connection in the real world as well -- the two have kids at the same school. For now, that’s the closest fans will get to a superhero crossover!
