A BA pilot has reported that a drone hit his
passenger plane as it was landing at Heathrow Airport. The aircraft
touched down safely. Sky's Rebecca Williams reports.
It is believed that a plane was hit by a drone over the weekend, so it looks like it has finally happened after all those close calls. A British Airways plane was coming in for a landing at Heathrow
Airport in London when reports indicate a drone clipped the aircraft.
The event, which happened in the middle of the day, might have been
caught on camera, according to one passenger.
No one was hurt and the plane safely touched down around 1 p.m., just minutes after the suspected drone collision. Once the plane was checked out it was given the go-ahead to continue on with its scheduled flights.
The passengers on the plane were unaware that their plane
was thought to be in a collision with a drone. When learning of this
incident via the news after landing, one passenger realized that she had
witnessed something from the plane’s window that may be of some help to
investigators, reports The Mirror on April 18.
As the plane was coming in for a landing at London’s Heathrow Airport
she noticed in a field below that there was a group of people. This
fashion blogger who was included in the 132 passengers on Flight BA727
coming from Geneva Switzerland saw these “numerous flight enthusiasts”
in a field below intently watching the plane. She believes they may have
captured the drone event on camera.
Computer World
reports, "The U.K. Civil Aviation Authority said it was aware of “a
possible incident” with a drone at Heathrow on Sunday, which is subject
to investigation by the Metropolitan Police. It reminded drone users of
the country’s "dronecode," which prohibits drones from flying above 400
feet (about 122 meters) and requires them to stay away from aircraft,
helicopters, airports and airfields."
