Two weeks prior to the 2016 NFL Draft the Los Angeles Rams worked out a trade with the Tennessee Titans
for the number one overall pick. The Titans had trade talks with both
the Rams and the Philadelphia Eagles; however, it was the deal with Los
Angeles that provided enough assets to strike a deal. A wily decision by
Rams General Manager Les Snead that sent shockwaves throughout the
league. The Titans receive 1st Round pick (15th), 2nd Round Pick(43rd),
2nd Round Pick (45th), 3rd Round pick (76th), 1st Round pick in 2017 and
a 3rd Round pick in 2017. The Rams receive 1st Round pick (1st), 4th
Round pick (113th) and 6th Round pick (177th).
Ironically, very similar to what the Washington Redskins
pulled off for the 2nd overall selection in the 2012 NFL Draft. The Rams
actually got the better of the trade, receiving a stockpile of draft
picks, although it did not result in enough wins to make the Rams a
playoff team. Today’s riveting, blockbuster trade could dramatically
rectify that situation. By trading back the Titans now possess six picks
of the top 77 selections in the 2016 NFL Draft. In the first place, the
trade to land the top pick is an understandable desperation move for
the Rams to improve the team at the most important position and land a
much-needed franchise quarterback.
The trade, allowing the Rams to move to the front of the
line and select the top passer will drastically alter the first round of
the draft as well as send the Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys and the
division rival San Francisco 49ers scurrying, in need of revising their
draft boards. Although former Ole Miss Left Tackle Laremy Tunsil remains
a possibility, Los Angeles will select either former University of
California quarterback Jared Goff or former North Dakota State
quarterback Carson Wentz. It only depends on the Rams draft board and
which player the team rates higher.
Several people fell for the smokescreen or coach speak that
Rams Head Coach Jeff Fisher let out stating that Case Keenum would be
the team’s starting quarterback in lieu of drafting a quarterback in the
first round. In all actuality, Case Keenum could still emerge as Los
Angeles week one starter. However, when you have a glaring need the best
way to address said the need is to draft at the position in addition to
bringing in a veteran. On the evening of April, 28 2016 the Los Angeles
Rams either Carson Wentz or Jared Goff will be the new face of the
franchise. in the same quarterback room as Case Keenum, Nick Foles and
Sean Mannion.
In regards to the Los Angeles Rams quarterback situation,
the fact of the matter is that Nick Foles fell out of favor with Head
Coach Jeff Fisher and the Rams coaching staff prior to Foles being
replaced in the starting lineup by Case Keenum. The coaching staff
obviously has more faith in Case Keenum, at this time, but both the
front office and coaching staff realized the need for an upgrade. The
Rams are not in a rush, at this time, to give Sean Mannion the keys to
the car, so to speak. The Los Angeles Rams will get exactly what they’re
after for the upcoming 2016 NFL season, a highly competitive four-man
competition at the quarterback position. In training camp the Rams will
also find out if Case Keenum can be a bridge to Carson Wentz or Jared
Goff.
