The incident occurred at 4:01 of the third period on Thursday night
as the Capitals defeated the Penguins 4-3 in the first game of their
Eastern Conference semifinal.
Before the fine was announced, Capitals coach Barry Trotz said he thought the hit was "shin-on-shin."
"Sheary gives a little shimmy, and it was really
shin-on-shin," Trotz said Friday. "We leave everything to the league.
Whatever they decide, I think we're fine with. That's what their job is,
and we've got to respect what they do. Player safety with the NHL has
done, I think, a good job. It's not the easiest job, I know that.
Whatever they decide, we're fine with."
The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
