The former Shortland Street star made the move to the USto star in Riverdale, a television adaptation of the beloved Archie comics.
As Scout exclusively reported, Apa landed the lead role following a four-month global talent search and shooting has been underway in Vancouver, Canada.
Vanity Fair magazine reports that Riverdale tested “through the roof” with audiences. No surprise the network found a home for it on its packed schedule.
The CW network screens a number of hit shows, including Supernatural, Arrow, The Vampire Diaries and The Flash. Landing a lead role on a show on the network is a big deal for any actor, especially a teen from New Zealand.
The Kiwi actor took to Instagram to celebrate following the news, sharing an Archie comic graphic reading: "Everything is perfect."
Riverdale also stars fellow young actor Cole Sprouse, while 90210 star Luke Perry plays Apa's father Fred Andrews.
Apa's New Zealand agent, Mandy Jacobsen from Red 11 – who also reps Joe Naufahu (Game of Thrones) and Beulah Koale (Spielberg’s Thank You For Your Service) – told Scout landing the role of Archie is a significant achievement for the young Kiwi.
“KJ has done really well in Hollywood and this new role is terrific.
He’s worked really hard and he deserves all the success he is
achieving,” she said.
