Rafael Nadal continues to move along in the
2016 Italian Open, looking for his eighth championship in Rome. The
world’s No.5 ranked player moved onto the quarterfinals Thursday, likely
setting up a match with the best player in the sport.
Getting a measure of revenge from his upset
loss at Wimbledon two years ago, Nadal knocked off Nick Kyrgios in the
third round. Kyrgios won a competitive first set, but Nadal came back to
win the next two, getting a 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-4 victory.
The match lasted nearly three hours, as Nadal
rallied to win another match on his favorite surface. If Novak Djokovic
can beat Thomaz Bellucci later in the day, it will set up another match
between Nadal and Djokovic.
Djokovic holds a 25-23 career edge of Nadal,
winning their last six meetings. Djokovic eliminated Nadal from the
semifinals at Indian Wells in March.
