“I was mid-session with someone else expecting him to show up about 45 min later,” Miller’s personal trainer Pasternak told Page Six on Wednesday. “One of the ladies who works with me walked in with kind of a blank look on her face and held up her phone and there was a news release [about Miller’s death].”
Miller, who died last week from an apparent overdose at age 26, started training with Pasternak — a Los Angeles-based trainer-to-the-stars — a year and a half ago thanks to his then-girlfriend, Ariana Grande.
“Ariana was such an incredibly positive influence on him as she’s someone who kind of lives a very healthy lifestyle,” Pasternak, who trained the two stars separately, said. “She thought that Mac and I would be a good fit for each other and he got hooked [on working out], it took him a bit but when he got into it, he loved it.”
Pasternak said Miller was always in high spirits and was most recently looking forward to going on tour following his album release in August. He shared a photo on Instagram of the “Self Care” rapper the day he died with the caption saying that the two had coffee the day before.
“I know people that are depressed [and] that was not a depressed person,” he said. “This was not planned. He would be mad if he knew he died, he would be so pissed off,” adding that Miller and Grande are “two people who were great together and they’re two people who were both really happy not together.”
Pasternak, who also played basketball with the late rapper, told us he was “super active and athletic” and that for Miller the gym acted as an “oasis from the daily stresses of business and work.”
“He was probably the most loved person who comes in the studio,” he said. “Everybody loves Mac, he was always in a good mood, never ever in a bad mood. He has the opposite of some kind of egos you sometimes experience with entertainers, he didn’t feel like he needed to be the loudest person in the room, [he was] always funny, always lighthearted, and just the sweetest, sweetest guy.”
