Jeff Sessions has resigned as attorney-general, ending a tumultuous reign at the Department of Justice during which he came under frequent attack from President Donald Trump.
Mr Sessions submitted his resignation on Wednesday, just a day after the midterm elections in which Democrats retook the House of Representatives and Republicans increased their majority in the Senate.
He said in a letter to the president: “At your request, I am submitting my resignation”.
Mr Trump said Matthew Whitaker, chief of staff to Mr Sessions, would become acting attorney-general and a permanent replacement would be nominated later.
“We thank attorney-general Jeff Sessions for his service, and wish him well!” said Mr Trump in a tweet.
