Firefighters are trying to put out a fire in a forestry block near Springfield, in the Selwyn district of Canterbury.
Three crews were called shortly before 4.30am this morning, and helicopters have been helping them out.
Fire and Emergency says the blaze in the Dalethorpe Plantation is contained, but 1.5 hectares of slash is still burning.
Contractors with heavy machinery are on their way to help.
