One person has died in Oamaru after a fleeing driver was pursued by the police.

Police said the driver fled about 7am and officers followed for a short time before abandoning the chase.
The vehicle was found crashed at the intersection of Severn and Wansbeck streets in Oamaru.
One of the vehicle's occupants died at the scene and a second person was taken to hospital by helicopter.
Inspector Marty Gray said it was a tragic outcome and urged people to stop for the police.
