The woman’s partner escaped injury, while one of the wounded men got away.
The officers came under fire when they arrived shortly after 5pm at the Jackson Masala Street house at which the robbery had taken place.
“They saw suspects running,” provincial police commissioner Arno Lamoer said.
“When they tried to block the suspects, one suspect shot the officer in the head.
“The second officer was not injured.
“Both suspects were injured and a firearm was confiscated. One of them was able to run away, but the police are after him.”
The man’s accomplice was arrested and taken to a nearby hospital. Lamoer said a firearm had been confiscated.
He said the dead officer’s identity was being withheld until her relatives had been notified.
Police crime scene experts placed more than 10 cones in the street to mark the number of bullet casings found.
A pathologist examined the officer’s body, which police covered with a silver blanket.
This was the second attack on a police officer in the area. On January 27, an officer was wounded while responding to a robbery, Lamoer said.
The officer remained in hospital.
