KIRO-TV reports that a student at the school, Erik Cervantes, watched as an unarmed woman he initially thought was the “lunch lady” step in when she saw an opportunity as 15-year-old Jaylen Fryberg paused and ultimately caused him to shoot himself in the neck.
“I believe she’s actually the real hero. She’s the one that intercepted him with the gun. He tried either reloading or tried aiming at her. She tried moving his hand away and he tried shooting and shot himself in the neck,” Cervantes said.
The woman was later identified as a first-year social studies teacher by the name of Megan Silberger, according to the Mirror.
Cervantes said that the shooting started with an argument between Fryberg and classmates.
“It started off with an argument, but then I looked back and there was just gunshots and just people falling down,” Cervantes said.
Silberger immediately intervened after Fryberg started shooting.
“She heard the gunshots first and she came in running through the door, right next to it,” he recalled.

“He came up from behind and had a gun in his hand and he fired about eight bullets into backs of them. They were his friends so it wasn’t just random,” Luton said. “Then he turned and looked at me and my girlfriend … and kind of gave us a smirk and turned around and then shot more bullets outside.”
Cervantes said that once Silberger stepped in, it didn’t take long for the shooting to stop.
“It wasn’t (a) wrestle,” he said. “She just grabbed his arm, and it lasted like two seconds, and I heard another shot.”
That shot was the one that ended Fryberg’s life. His rampage left four critically injured and one dead along with himself.
According to classmates and teachers, Fryberg had been upset over a spoiled romance and decided to get vengeance in the most horrific manner possible. If it weren’t for Silberger’s brave acts, the body count could have been much higher as those in the school had no means of defending themselves from the crazed student.
The president of the Marysville Education Association described Silberger as, “Your classic first-year teacher with high enthusiasm, a lot of passion for what she does.”
Meanwhile, those throughout the community are hailing her as a hero for disregarding her own safety in order to save the lives of others.
While her actions were very heroic, the outcome could have also been much different. Yesterday’s shooting once again highlights the need to get rid of “Gun Free Zones” at our schools and either place armed guards within them or allow for teachers and administrators to be properly trained to carry their weapon at school.
Unfortunately, common sense no longer seems to be in this debate, so we’ll likely just see an onslaught of signs alerting potential killers that they won’t meet any resistance inside the building. I don’t know about you, but I want our children guarded with the same tools used to guard everything else of importance on the planet.
