A Colorado man attempting to avoid injury from a cigarette burn nearly killed himself when he jumped out of his car and fell to the ground as the car kept rolling — right over his head.
The man was backing out of his driveway at his Aurora home — a suburb just outside of Denver — when he lit his cigarette which then accidentally fell down the front of his jacket, according to Denver NBC affiliate 9News.
The startled driver quickly jumped out of his van that he left in reverse, which hit him and knocked him to the ground. Although his leap caused the cigarette to fall from his jacket and avoid a burn, his head wasn’t so fortunate when it was run over by the driver’s side tire.
The affiliate reported that the unnamed man was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, but police say he will likely survive his head injuries. No word on his ego though which was likely harmed by the embarrassment of this ridiculous incident.
A relative was in the front passenger seat during the incident and was not hurt. Alcohol is not a suspected factor in the accident, and police do not anticipate the filing of any charges. They remind drivers of the dangers of distractions and encourage them to limit distractions whenever possible.
Moral of the story, don’t light and drive — or if you do, don’t jump out of your moving vehicle. A cigarette burn sure beats getting your head run over.
