If you have ever been around a newborn baby, you know that
people are always flocking to hold them. One mother recently
experienced just that, and she nearly lost her baby – all because of an
avoidable risk.
Claire Henderson’s newborn child was hospitalized with
life-threatening cold sores after letting others kiss her baby on the
mouth. She has now sent out a chilling warning for all parents to avoid
any future health risks for their children.
“Please share this with every new mum and pregnant woman you know,” Henderson, from Doncaster, England, wrote on Facebook on September 16. “COLD SORES CAN BE FATAL FOR A BABY.”
Henderson explained that before a newborn reaches the age of
3 months old, they are unable to fight off the herpes virus. If they
contract the virus, they can suffer from liver or brain damage that can
ultimately lead to the infant’s death.
Instead of subjecting your infant to an unwanted herpes
virus, parents need to prevent the exposure. That’s why Henderson has
desperately reached out through Facebook to warn parents about the
health risks of kissing a newborn.
“I know this sounds like I am scaremongering but if my
friend had not told me about this my baby girl could have been very
seriously ill,” Henderson admitted. She went on to explain that the
moment she started noticing cold sores on her baby, she rushed her to
the emergency room. Thankfully, her daughter Brooke is okay, but only
after spending three days on a drip and another two days in observation.
Furthermore, it is important to note that people can carry
and pass the virus to a newborn even if a cold sore is not present.
Therefore, no one should be kissing your infant on the mouth.
Losing a child is a pain like no other, but losing a child
over an avoidable mistake would be traumatizing and senseless. Instead
of ignoring these facts, it’s important that we all spread awareness so
no more infants are lost over a simple kiss.
