Hunting can be a dangerous sport for various reasons. One
hunter in Idaho recently had a difficult hunting trip after breaking his
leg and getting stranded in the woods. After realizing he couldn’t walk
and spending several hours contemplating his next move, he decided to
end his life. Of course, before he went through with it, he decided to
write goodbye letters to his wife and kids, and as a result, something
unexpected happened.
John Sain was tracking an elk in the remote Idaho wilderness
when he accidentally slipped between two logs and fell. Unfortunately,
the fall broke both of the bones in his lower leg and left him unable to
walk, stranding him in the woods.
“I honestly didn’t think I was going to make it out,” explained Sain, according to NY Daily News.
He knew he was miles away from the trail, had no cell service, and was
in excruciating pain. Suicide seemed like the best option, as Sain
recalled, “Contemplated on just ending it right there honestly.”
First, he would write goodbye letters to both his wife and
kids. Fortunately, while he was writing the letters, Sain changed his
mind and knew he had to find a way to get back home to his family. He
then decided to make a splint out of sticks and ripped cloth, which
would make it possible for him to begin the difficult crawl back to the
trail.

He carried “a little food, a water purifier, and a small survival kit, and he built a fire each night for warmth,” according to NY Daily News.
Four days after he slipped and fell, Sain finally made it to a location
where he was found by two motorcyclists, who immediately contacted
emergency personnel.
Thankfully, the motorcyclists saw Sain just in time, as he
was severely dehydrated, in pain, and beginning to break down. “Thank
God. I was praying the whole way that it would happen and it did. My
prayers were answered for sure,” Sain said.
John Sain and his family
When an air ambulance arrived in the wilderness, the two
heroic motorcyclists chopped down some trees to make room for their
landing. They immediately transported Sain to Boise hospital, where he
is expected to stay for a few days to recover from leg surgery.

“It was hard just knowing that he’s out in the hills just
trying to stay alive,” Jennifer Sain explained, after her and their
children flew out to Boise. “It still doesn’t seem real to me.”
Even after the remarkable experience, Sain still plans to
return hunting, only this time with a satellite phone or a GPS locator.
Thankfully, Sain had written those letters to change his mind, only
proving the point further that everything happens for a reason — and
this time the reason was God.
