New Zealand sports stars Dan Carter, Maria Tutaia, Inga Tuigamala, Anna Stanley and other high-profile Kiwis have appeared on a short video promoted by Change the NZ Flag - authorised by one-time National Party candidate Lewis Holden - encouraging New Zealanders to vote for change in the upcoming flag referendum.
The expat former All Black insists the silver fern is more our country’s symbol.
"What represents the current New Zealander today, is the fern," said Carter, who calls France home.
Silver Fern shooter Maria Tutaia believes flag mix-ups are "embarrassing", especially on an international stage.
"It's embarrassing not knowing which flag is which. C'mon New Zealand let's make our flag our own,” Tutaia says on the video.
Anna Stanley, who captained the Ferns to victory at the 2003 Netball World Championships, believes, like Carter, the “iconic” silver fern should appear on our flag.
The former netballer said: "We want to have our own brand, our own sense of identity, for me the iconic symbol is the silver fern."
Past National Party Prime Ministers Jim Bolger and Jenny Shipley also back the campaign.
So too ex-Christchurch mayor Bob Parker, who led the city through the devastating 2011 earthquake. He believes it’s time for New Zealand to have our own “unique international image”.
Former Wellington mayor Kerry Prendergast, current mayor Celia Wade-Brown, and former Air New Zealand boss Rob Fyfe also appeared in the video.

I'm all for a New Zealand flag change. On our adventures we are often mistaken for our west island cousins, and even just last week there were occurrences where our flags got mixed up. A new flag would give our country a clear identity worldwide which everyone would reap rewards from for generations to come. Of course there are always 2 sides to arguments and I'm no politician
The clip comes a day after Kiwi rally ace Hayden Paddon vouched for the change, saying our national flag is too often confused with Australia’s.
New Zealanders will take to the polls in March to decide whether to keep the current flag, or adopt a new black, white and blue silver fern design.
