Deadly train collision in Germany

At least eight people have died and around 150 others are injured following a train accident in Germany.

Two local passenger trains collided head-on in Bavaria, southern Germany, at 6:48am on Tuesday (local time).

Police say around 150 people were injured, 10 of them seriously, in the collision and at least eight people were killed. Due to confusion at the scene, there are no concrete numbers, police told the Associated Press.

"This is the biggest accident we have had in years in this region and we have many emergency doctors, ambulances and helicopters on the scene," a police spokesperson told the AP.

It's understood there are people still trapped inside the wreckage and a rescue attempt is underway. Dozens of rescue teams, including helicopters, are on site.

An investigation into the cause of the accident has been launched and the rail line, a single track between Rosenheim and Holzkirchen, remains blocked indefinitely.
