The 800-strong travelling contingent were charged £71 compared to the home club’s usual £15 a ticket and the £22 paid by Southampton fans in August.
To make their point about the Euro rip-off they unfurled a large homemade banner in the town’s city centre reading “Welcome to Scamdanavia.”
United manager Louis van Gaal came out in support, saying: “It is a big difference from the price of the game against Southampton. It shows you that Manchester United is a big team in this world.
“In the Netherlands you also have a big difference in prices but this is a lot. I have very much sympathy for the fans.”
But Midtjylland officials defended their pricing policy. Said manager Jess Thorup: “How can I say it? This is probably the biggest game in the history of this club.
“I have not heard a lot from our fans about the price, and even though everybody pays the same I think it is a fair price. I think I don’t have to go into this but I hope everybody gets value for their money.”
The Danish club resisted the temptation to switch to a larger venue despite UEFA regulations against standing meaning the capacity had to be reduced from 11,800 to 9,500.
Midtjylland board member Claus Steinlein also backed the pricing policy.
“Generally speaking you could say that we could have sold more than 50,000 tickets for this game,” he said. “So if you look at supply and demand perhaps the price should have been even higher.
“That’s the cost of watching a game like this. So I actually believe that we have been very fair and we certainly haven’t had any problems selling the tickets.
“Normally we have journalists criticise us for not making enough money and when we put the prices up the same journalists criticise us for making too much.” Now watch Manchester United fans confirm their feelings about the team's playing style in a hilarious chant
