Wow, a breakthrough in the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse case will send shivers down your spine. In a new insurance hearing, it was revealed that former Penn State head coach Joe Paterno may have known that Jerry was molesting children since way back in 1976. Here’s what we know about the appalling news.

It’s been 4 years since there’s been any new information about Jerry’s disgusting case, but one tiny line in a court order from a related insurance coverage case involving Penn State is turning the legendary coach’s image upside down. Local outlet Penn Live shared that line on May 5.

“In 1976, a child allegedly reported to PSU’s Head Coach Joseph Paterno that he (the child) was sexually molested by Sandusky,” says the shocking line. That’s right, this may be proof that Joe knew his assistant was molesting children for 36 years and never said anything, never tried to help. Joe died in 2012.

There are also references in 1987 and 1988 to other assistant coaches witnessing Jerry sexually abusing kids, but it was never brought to the attention of the school. So freaking appalling. It’s unclear what all of this could mean in terms of the case. The 52 charges originally brought against Jerry spanned from 1994 to 2009, and involved children from his charity The Second Mile, which worked with 8-10 year old foster children.

Jerry used this charity to hunt down victims, but he created it in 1977 after his retirement. If a child reported abuse to Joe in 1976, that means that the abuse was going on long before anyone even knew, and Joe could have stopped it almost four decades ago.
