Three people have been taken to hospital in serious conditions after they crashed trying to avoid road spikes deployed during a police pursuit near Taupo.
The trio,
allegedly travelling in a stolen vehicle, were spotted by police
heading towards Taupo on Wednesday afternoon, prompting a short police
chase.
It was called off due to fog.
However
police saw the vehicle again soon after and deployed road spikes which
the car tried to avoid and crashed in the process. They had to be cut
free by the Fire Service.
The two men in the car were taken to Waikato Hospital while a woman went to Rotorua.
All three have serious injuries.
An investigation into the incident has been opened by local police.
