Western parts of the South Island are being buffeted with heavy rain and strong winds with trampers warned that some streams and rivers may rise rapidly.
A large
trough will across New Zealand on Wednesday, bringing heavy rain to
western regions with the heaviest falls expected across the ranges of
Westland, Southern Alps and the Tararua Range.
The Westland ranges could receive up to 250mm of rain in 39 hours.
The
MetService are warning the rain may cause streams and rivers to rapidly
rise and could be dangerous for trampers in the area.
In
addition to the heavy rain, there are strong wind warnings in place for
the Canterbury High Country, Wellington, Marlborough and the Wairarapa.
Severe gales up to 140km/h on Thursday could damage trees and powerlines as well as make driving dangerous.
