The film stars Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World), Wes Bentley (The Hunger Games), Oscar winner Robert Redford and Oona Laurence, who appeared alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in Southpaw.
Little Oakes Fegley plays Pete, whose best friend Elliot happens to be a dragon.
Kiwi Karl Urban also stars in the film, which was shot in Tapanui, near Gore, last year.
Weta Digital, the New Zealand-based visual effects company founded by filmmaker Peter Jackson, has utilised the latest in digital technology to bring the dragon, Elliott, to life.
